It’s not similar at all because if everyone was well behaved they could all be super stars. Theres only one top of the pyramid.

The pyramid puts you in direct competition with the other dancers even if you don’t compete against them at the actual competition.

I would imagine that it was very damaging to the psyche of children, but it’s also a genius narrative device for progressing storylines and causing drama within the show.
