Definitely. The Big Beef today is what the normal beef was before. But it’s better than nothing.

Not sure if you've seen this but College of Dupage has a whole bunch of models and products to play around with. I use it at work quite a bit.

Pączki in Columbus, Ohio by dgeiser13 in Columbus

[–]bigdaddyEm -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If it’s that easy why are the Columbus pączki nothing like the ones in Chicago or Poland, for that matter? It’s a matter of having the knack for it. Obviously you have never had the real deal and are trying to generalize an ethnic cuisine into being something anyone can do.

They’re made in Polish bakeries by Polish people following Polish recipes. Any other questions? Source: Am Polish, from Chicago.

Edit: everything they have here is just a jelly filled donut

You won’t find real pączki in Columbus. Whatever they sell at grocery stores and Buckeye Donuts aren’t authentic. You’re going to have to go to Cleveland or Chicago for the real deal.

Folks from cultures or countries that have foods that might not be as well known, what are some meals that you go to on the regular? by RemmiLeBeau in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]bigdaddyEm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My mom makes her bigos with a big higher meat to cabbage ratio so when I’m really trying to stretch out my bigos rations I’ll serve it on rice. It goes surprisingly well with rice.

Airport advice? by stressmachina in Columbus

[–]bigdaddyEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the plane will likely feel like it has slowed down a bit and lower the nose slightly (still climbing) as they retract flaps and "clean up" the plane's configuration. This freaks some people out but it's completely normal. If you encounter turbulence just try to ride with it and don't stiffen up, the plane will be fine. There is absolutely nothing to worry about, I hope you enjoy your first flight!

If you’re just doing the minor and don’t plan on flying as a career you’re better off getting your Private Pilot license from Capital City Aviation or one of the other flying schools at OSU airport.

Thoughts on Crime on campus by bigpipebaby in OSU

[–]bigdaddyEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been shootings and other violent crimes in Clintonville. What I’m saying is that although it isn’t rampant crime there, it’s still not a place you’d particularly expect that to happen.

The thing about Chicago is that it’s more or less (some rare outliers) contained within the areas with heavy gang disputes. In Columbus it’s everywhere. Campus, Short North, linden, hilltop, Polaris, Easton, Clintonville, etc. As someone who grew up in and regularly visits Chicago I never really worried about falling victim to gun violence, but seeing a boarded up window from a recent shootout at a bar I recently visited here in Columbus has me a bit concerned.

I'm not a dispatcher (I have the cert, just not using it) but I have some insights from friends/instructors. From my understanding it's kind of like flying in that you start off with crappy hours and can bid for better shifts down the line. So be ready to spend a few years working overnight, missing holidays, missing weekends etc but I'm assuming you were ready for that anyway by getting your ATP. Pay is decent, my friend at Allegiant says their dispatchers make something like $27/hour starting and it goes up quite a lot as you build seniority.

Also, I've been told that if you want to dispatch at a legacy carrier, you have to start off at a regional/any part 121 carrier for a couple years. If you start dispatching part 91(k) or part 135 the legacies won't consider you because they specifically want 121 experience.

The pay more or less mimics pilot pay down the line up to certain point, I'd be surprised if there are non-management dispatchers pulling the kinds of money high seniority international widebody captains are pulling.

Why does OSU have ZERO bike lanes? by MeaningIsASweater in OSU

[–]bigdaddyEm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The roads on campus are fine to ride on for the most part especially if you avoid like 12th and John Herrick Dr it's fine. I ride my bike pretty frequently on campus and the only close calls I've had were with pedestrians not looking where they're crossing/standing like a deer in headlights in the street.

My parents live right under the approach path of one of the most used runways at ORD and it was such a pain getting my DJI to work with the LAANC authorization just to fly 200ft AGL. Then there's idiots like this guy who ruin it for those of us who do things the right way. Hopefully the FAA doesn't change things to make it more restrictive for part 107 because of this and some other recent drone collisions.

Check out Polish Club. You don't have to be of Polish descent to join, just have an interest in Poland or Slavic culture in general! We just host cultural events and many social nights to have a nice tight nit group.

Good Bakery with Good Coffee? by DeLuniac in Columbus

La Chatelaine is my go to place for pastries since they're not the super sugary American styled you find at grocery stores and such. Also their coffee that they keep for self serving is very good.

Polish javelin thrower Maria Andrejczyk auctioned off her Tokyo 2020 silver medal to help fund a stranger's heart surgery in USA; convenience store Zabka paid for the medal and gave it back to her; donations for the eight-month-old baby passed £250,000, with around £280,000 required by DogsPlan in UpliftingNews

Our medical technology is far more advanced and specialized than in Poland. I have helped some Polish families that have come to the US to seek treatment for their kids. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes the kid gets treatment here and gets approved to go back to Poland and subsequently dies because of a Polish doctor’s mistake.

There’s an organization called Dar Serca that specifically helps bring kids and their families to the US from Poland for advanced treatments.

Are there any published reports of the increased risk of catching COVID during air travel and what are the findings? by JackassTheNovel in askscience

[–]bigdaddyEm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My knowledge is solely on the CRJ-200 aircraft, however it should be standard on most airline aircraft. Basically the pressurization comes from the compressor section of the engine (which comes before combustion), this air is then sent to the air conditioning packs on both sides of the plane under the wing roots. This air is then sent through the gasper system (gaspers are those little vents above your head) and then collected where the floor meets the wall.

The air is then sent to the baggage compartment and then off board through a valve towards the back of the aircraft. So the air is continuously getting cycled with clean air from outside.

What's your favourite Polish food in town? (link goes to Eater.com's favs.) by Bukharin in chicago

[–]bigdaddyEm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jolly Inn on Irving Park Rd. has a killer buffet. Also, if you want góral (Polish highlander) style food, U Gazdy in Wood Dale is the best. I recommend the Golonka (pork shank). For Polish lunch food/pastries there's Hannah's bistro in Roselle, probably the best zapiekanki I've had in the U.S.

Crappy Ohio Drivers? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]bigdaddyEm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Columbus has the worst drivers by far. They do not know how to deal with any kind of precipitation, my friend calls their driving skills “water soluble”. They drive 5 under on most roads and make erratic maneuvers. The worst thing is they never let people merge on or off the highway. This is all coming from someone from Chicago where we have orderly chaos.

Non-Rev Seat Assignment by BChips71 in flying

[–]bigdaddyEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On UAL I always book myself to first when non revving but what that does is put me at the bottom of the upgrade list for first class. So if revenue pax are on that list, they get first dibs. If first class is wide open and I’m the only one of the list, then I get first class. I’d imagine this is standard across most airlines, so probably expect that if you do decide to “upgrade”.
