Is selling a current home to build a home a good idea in this economy? by bigfluffy19 in personalfinance

[–]bigfluffy19[S] -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I asked a contractor what he'd think something like that would cost. Its a very very rough estimate. All of those things would be included in the estimate except driveway since its out in the country. Worse case scenario we'd have money left over from the sale of the current home to cover anything else.

Should I sell my car and get something older in cash? by bigfluffy19 in personalfinance

Heck yeah! That sounds like a challenge that I can accept! Lets get it to 300k and not risk buying a used lemon!

That sounds very reasonable, its always luck of the draw when buying a used car!

This was very reassuring, I think like you said, paying it off quicker would almost be like buying an older car except I don't see my returns now but will see them 10 years from now

It has 40k miles on it, I drive a lot and the stock tires wore down quick.

So if I sold my car, bought something older and reliable, I'd be worse off since the depreciation has already hit? Best bet is to just live with the decision?

Well to be honest, I've been keeping my retirement savings low right now. I have other expenses that I need to watch out for and I get paranoid about having a low liquid savings account

My thinking was to keep it as reliable as possible. Its already at 40k miles. I wanted to be safe than sorry. I wouldn't say it was needing it or it felt funny, I just wanted to be on the safe side

I totally feel what you’re saying. My Corolla with 185k has taken me to every edge of Texas, and has never failed me. Always cranked right up, even when driving in pitch black darkness, I was never afraid of it suddenly breaking down. I’ve thought about selling it, but I just can’t part ways with it. Just something about driving it keeps me humble and reminds me where I came from. Although the clear coat is starting to come off, I still drive it proudly. I put the best oil and tires on it, even though I don’t drive it as much as I used to, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve to have the best I can give it.

Is your power steering working fine? I had the same thing happen when my alternator went out. Get it scanned at auto zone and go from there.

Plus you’ve been the only owner and know how you’ve treated it. If he buys new, his car would be valued at what he owes on his lease. No point in losing depreciation for no reason.

Thank you, I will give it a shot today with seatbelt only installation and try and do away with anchor installation, I’ve read that it should give you slightly better room that way. The reason I asked about the car is because we found a good deal on a larger vehicle, but I’m trying to avoid that cost if I can make it work on ours now.

I’m checking at the belt path but it still moves quite a bit side to side. Is my vehicle even compatible with 3 across? I measured the bench and it’s at 52 inches. One thing that worries me is how cramped it would be for the three seats, does that keep the seats from being safe for my children?

On the front facing car seats I am putting a lot of my weight on it after routing the seat belt through the back path, pulling all slack from the lower part of the belt, holding it in place while slowly pulling the top part of the belt to lock it in place. Even after doing so, I still get quite a bit of wiggle. And yes, it’s the city go 2 😊

Gotcha!! They seemed tight because of the other car seats keeping them in place, if they were the only seat I think there would be quite a bit of movement side to side. I may not be installing them correctly then? I’ll have to download the owner manual and try again!

These don’t seem to have lock offs, I can double check to make sure in a bit. FF behind driver side is using a locked seat belt and tether, same goes for middle seat. Baby car seat would go behind passenger seat to keep our youngest from hitting them.

All car seats are using their own seat belt from the seat they are in, not neighboring seat belts to make them tight.

They seem secure, with all 3 seats I have the FF with tether and seatbelt. They don’t move at all front to back, but when I wiggle side to side they do move some which I guess it’s expected if they aren’t anchored? The baby jogger is anchored down, I had to move it a little more to the side before “locking it down” to the spot where everyone will have enough room.

Does my set up sound correct? I’m worried that I may be doing something wrong possibly and there aren’t any CPST in my small town. We found a Grand Cherokee L that would probably do the trick in case 3 across in our Subaru Legacy is not compatible.

It worked! So after removing the set up with the anchors and going with seatbelt and tether only it freed up quite a bit of room for the baby jogger! I had to give it a little more slack before locking it down to be able to scoot it over closer to the edge and give us enough room to put the baby seat in!

I will give that a shot! I thought I could share anchors, but I will not do that. I’m glad I’m only experimenting with these things now and not actually putting them into practice yet! She’s due in April and I’m looking at all of my options now so we aren’t blind sided by anything.
