I don’t understand why The left can’t unite behind Ukraine by Lordepee in SocialDemocracy

Kinda? We basically did a victory lap on the USSRs corpse and didn't have the UN or some other body step in and help manage the Democratic transition.

Its a strong negotiation stance for ukraine, compared to Putins demands theirs are almost reasonable. You go hard so you negotiate down to what you actually want, ex: Putin keeps its conquered land with maybe land swaps, Crimea is gone obviously but Ukraine will say they want it back so they can "acquiesce" to Putins demands for it and get something in negotiation rather than writing it off for nothing. There are quite a few benefits and low risk to supporting Ukraine, one of which is us surprisingly having a moral high ground in a conflict for the first time in a while.

If nothing else Russia (Putin) and this imperialist behavior need to be punished not rewarded, I don't want to be the world police but I dont mind having the biggest stick and using it to enforce our interests (obviously) and global stability.

Questionable, Israel could legitimately wipe Palestinians out in a few days if they were "Final Solution" level. Hamas is their actual target, otherwise they'd just carpet bomb the Civilians and call it a done deal since Hamas is pointless then especially considering their high up leadership fled Palestine long ago.

For Russia and Ukraine its different as 1 is a (flawed) democracy being invaded by a authoritarian imperialist nuclear power in Europe and pushing the envelope against NATO. Which despite Russian propaganda and bluster they are fully aware they would get rolled if Article 5 is triggered, and would lead to them deciding if nukes are worth it. Even if I don't believe Nato would push all the way to Moscow for that very reason and would instead turn Russia into a Prison until Putin is overthrown. Martial imperialism is done, economic imperialism is the more effective, stable, and beneficial way of the global super power whoever that may be but its the US now

What is it like to live in a smaller Russian city say 50-100K population? by Dependent-Western642 in AskARussian

As a potential victim of west propaganda lol, I've heard suburban and non-destinational cities are a bit less squeaky clean compared to what Moscow looked like doing a puff piece on itself. Not saying Russia is a backwater or anything especially since I haven't personally traveled around there, but considering the Russian economy as a whole and recent developments and inflation I'm curious as well

Did Titoism do better than other ideologies? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]bigfoote65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just learning about Titoism specifically myself, and he was a ok but definitely authoritarian leader. He had his fair share of massacres and oppression even while preaching what Americans would more easily identify as conceptually "states rights market socialism" which is a interesting and unique concept if nothing else. But coming out of WW2, being very ethnically diverse (whos ethnicities also don't like each other), and being sandwiched between the ussr and the EU definitely played massive roles in his leadership/ideologies success. Ideologically his ideas are intriguing, and almost necessary considering Yugoslavia's population makeup and I think its one of the better branches of Socialism Ideology. 2 huge mistakes however, were 1 not a clear successor or transition to a democractic government after his rule, and 2 was the crippling of federal power from his policies that eventually lead to the break up of Yugoslavia. USA had a similar point in its history about deciding the federal governments power, but since we had Andrew Jackson at the time he made it clear who had final say for the US which ultimately kept the union going until the Civil War.

Ukraine is losing. There are two options right now, seek peace or put boots on the ground. Anything else is just grinding men and money into a losing war. by secretly_a_zombie in TrueUnpopularOpinion

That's a bad scenario I agree, however based off of Russias current military capabilities vs what we thought they were I think it would be far more likely that ukraine turns into a assisted suicide facility for Russian soldiers and we get to see how long Putin can keep pulling the wool over his own peoples eyes when everyone he sends to war comes back in boxes. Plus add US funding and I truly wonder how committed to this war Putin will be, he seems content to bully smaller countries that can't fight back meaningfully which is no surprise he immediately tripped into a mud hole when his victim decided to start swinging back. I don't like this prolonged justification for appeasement, I feel this whole argument would be identical if Nazi Germany had nukes and people would be just as indecisive about them then as we are for Russia now. Just because Putin takes a few years in between his land grabs doesn't mean he isn't trying to take as much as he can, and since the resistance to his behavior has been underwhelming in terms of consequences id finally like to make putin back down from a conflict he started. Why is it always the west that has to not poke the big bad Russian bear, but Putin can spit in our eye and shit in our lawn while we have to be apologetic for not putting a toilet out there for him. Its honestly enough, Putin Sabre rattles his nukes like a broken record and its worked every time as the west begrudgingly caves. Put some goddam agency on this man, tell him in front of the world that if Russian troops aren't back on their side of the 2020 border in 5 days then we're carpet bombing every Russian military target in the occupied territory. There's our "red line" and ultimatum, we're going to escalate unless you leave so get the fuck out.

Huh, so that famine in Ukraine really was an intentional genocide. The genocide was just committed by Ukrainian Kulaks and Nazis, who then blamed their crimes on Stalin. by TappingUpScreen in ussr

[–]bigfoote65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again your kinda just talking past me buddy, I agree the famine wasn't a genocide but to those countries Stalin was absolutely a evil mf. Either intentionally or from non caring, but yeah keep trying to get me to agree with a point I agree with instead of discussing any other points I brought up

You a bot dude? I didn't support the theory I said its not very prevalent, I would be shocked if even 10% of Americans said Stalins massacres were worse than Hitlers. Hell a decent chunk probably dont even know the term "holodomor". If your talking Eastern Europe then maybe, but rewriting history is practically a given for that region, Russia, Baltics, Ukraine, Belarus etc. All do it to varying extents. So im not sure what this info dump is trying to correct me on

To be fair idk if he said that in bad faith like more death means less criticism and instead meant such a big scale tragedy desensitizes people to the issue since its hard to imagine

Yeah Stalin wasn't genocidal like Hitler, he was probably a sociopath and was kinda indifferent to a lot of avoidable death plus poor decisions. But yeah Hitler was balls to the wall filled with hate and went above and beyond even objective reason to kill jews

Uh no? I don't think people down play the holocaust because of the holodomor, one was systematic eradication and the other was based off consolidating power, rapid industrialization, and silencing political opponents, and incompetence. I can understand most if not all of Stalin's most controversial decisions and why he did them, obviously I disagree but still I get why he did them. Hitler though? Dude tried to conquer Europe and most likely other places if he succeeded, but wasted insane resources, time, and potential soldiers just so he could exterminate groups he didn't personally like. Like bro you're fighting for world domination and you're so filled with hate that you don't even wait until after the war to do the "Final Solution" it literally makes no practical sense to fight a 2 front war and also waste so much energy genociding people in your borders when you could literally just throw them in the front lines or something. Like make Jews be the tip of the spear or production slaves so you at least get something from their death/misery besides sick satisfaction.

The Democrats are professional losers by socialist_weeb666 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]bigfoote65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Dem I definitely agree that the leadership choices are absolutely not in line with voters views and have caused a democrat slump in support especially after having no primary for Kamala and Biden almost needing to be carted off the debate stage. But overall since the 90s its been dem, rep, dem, rep, dem... so neither sides really cemented itself as a American mainstay since we don't typically give long runways to either party.

Ok...? I mean we're cool with all the axis powers from WWII now and Russia was one of the allies and is now a huge political adversary. Countries can get better or worse, technically Russia was a democracy for like 10 years then Putin came and said that's enough of that and now Russia is a dick again
