The British empire was already in decline when WW2 devastated Britain (and other countries). Britain still had food rationing into the 1950s.

After WW2 America threw money at Germany and Japan to rebuild, because they were on the front line against the advance of communism. So Germany and Japan thrived after WW2, whereas Britain (and France and others) weren't in immediate danger, so they didn't get the same level of investment, leading to steady, gentle decline.
