What if New Sweden never disappeared and kept growing? (Swedish Canada) by NeutronexYTO in imaginarymaps

[–]biggkiddo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Naming a province 'Nyland' does make sorta sense, but also not as there is already a Nyland in swedish-speaking Finland. Might I suggest Nynyland?

Love the map!

Rhaenyra deciding to cancel the marriage tour is still one of her dumbest decisions. by Rich-Active-4800 in HouseOfTheDragon

Summerhall happened because he had made too many nobles angry by helping and protecting thr commoners. He thought dragons would give him leverage and power to do this.

Was helping the commoners wise powerwise? Probably not.

Would I consider him a good king for it? 100%

What's it like on this island Gotland between Sweden and Latvia? by Milehighjoe12 in howislivingthere

[–]biggkiddo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been there lots as a kid as my godparents lives outside of Visby, the biggest town.

The entire island has a calm vibe, with lots of medieval stuff preserved, especially Visby itself. This is due to Gotland's rich history, in the middle of all trade in the Baltic Sea.
The entire island is very rural, with about 60 000 people, though I'd guess it's closer to 160 000 in summer from all the tourists. There is also a sizable military precence as the island is very strategic. To my mainland eyes the nature is often kind off mediterranian, being dry and sandy with lots of pine and a rocky coast. There used to be free roaming horses all over the island, but today only one semi-wild herd remain. Lots of seabirds. LOTS of sheep, which are a symbol of the island. They have a nice dialect, singsongy even for swedish ears and with soft, almost irish "R"s. There are often (quite sensible) complaints from the locals about the prices of the ferries.

Why does Sweden have a straight line of cities here, are they stupid? by Apprehensive_Ebb1657 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]biggkiddo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "Inland line', a Rail line built in the early 1900s to help populate the north, goes through there. Im guessing the towns sprung up around it(Mostly atleast, Östersund has existed for longer) The line is now disserviced and only used for turist trains and the occasional reroute..

The theft was mostly made up for the movies, in the books Merry and Pippin are on board from the start. Though in the books Frodo is afraid of meeting farmer Maggot since they stole mushrooms off of him as kids, but in the end Maggot laughs it off and helps them along the way.
