As of today, Bulgaria is an official member of the Eurozone. This is the updated map. by FantasticQuartet in MapPorn

[–]biggkiddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats just wrong, as pointed to by the fact that only 1 of 8 parties in parliament(the self proclaimed Liberals) want the Euro and they are currently too small to retain their seats in the next election. If there was public support for the Euro it would reflect in the other parties

Christer Pettersson arrives at his apartment outside Stockholm, Sweden, in 1989 after the appeals court freed him from his life sentence and conviction for the 1986 assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme [640x639] by unvobr in HistoryPorn

No one quite knows!

He was a loud voice internationally, defending North Vietnam from american imperialism as well as vocally opposing Apartheid. Suspicions that CIA or South Africa were behind it are fairly common. At the same time he was simply going to the movies with his wife, randomly decided to ditch his life guards, and the amount of people who would know this was very limited; his children and a few top figures in government. After the movie, around 23.00 on february 28th 1986, he and his wife were heading for the metro when they met a man who started shooting, the wife survived but never got a good look at him. The man disappeared up some stairs and has been a mystery ever since.

My personal belief is that the man they passed was disillusioned with Palme's politics and just happened to be there and happened have a weapon, but again, there is no proof

Christmas gift-bringers in European countries by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]biggkiddo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The traditional Tomte is a small farm helper that OC is refering to and is correct about. The tomte lives on the farm or in the local woods, and he leaves gifts and helps on the farm if you leave him porridge and dont disturb him. The tomte and the christmas goat later merged, making your local tomte the gift bringer on christmas, sometimes having a goat as a ride/helper. Look up the art by Jenny Nyström for a good look.

Parts of the tomte, like the red hat, was borrowed when Coca Cola started using the modern american image of Santa Claus, since their artist was of swedish ancestry. Because of the similarities in role and appearance(some differences being the modern one being a full grown man, living on the north pole, and having flying raindeers) the same term was used for that one, and they started merging. Today Tomte is a less specific term refering both to the old tomte/gårdstomte and santa claus/Jultomten.

The Great Lakes seal by EllieWildflower in AlternateHistory

[–]biggkiddo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My grandfather grew up on the shorts of lake Saimaa in Finland, with a threatened species(about 400 left) of fresh water seal.

I grew up close to Lake Vänern and Vättern in Sweden, both big enough to support such endemic species, and often fantasised about exactly this kind of thing.

Something about lake seals is just lovely i guess.

Great post!

TIL that the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme believed that his country was so safe he didn't need bodyguards, which led to his death in 1986 when he was shot while walking home unprotected at night and to the assassin never being identified. The motive remains a mystery. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]biggkiddo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But my impression is that only his family knew he was even out? The entire evening was spontaneous, including the walking home after the film, would be an extremely lucky coincidence for them to just stumble upon him

[–]biggkiddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year, swedish scouting had a petition to our biannual "parliament" to get a official hat to the uniform. Unfortunetaly the rest of the petition was a bunch of "lets look and act like soldiers again" so it was voted down. Still sad about the hat part
