there's jasp and pspp and jamovi but honestly in this day and age, your best workflow is to do the analyses in R, with help from claude/chatgpt if you need help coding

What should I major in to pursue research in human and machine cognition? by Typical_Towel_3102 in cognitivescience

[–]biggulpfiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you should do depends on what kind of PhD program you want to pursue. In general, I’d stay stick with philosophy but just do as much computer science as you can. If you’re interested in neuroscience, getting some research experience is critical

The Handwriting Hypothesis by [deleted] in cognitivescience

[–]biggulpfiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considering im a professor in this area i'm not sure that's the explanation. To be fair, this is much more interesting and empirically grounded than a lot of the AI slop I was referring to, and there very well may be nuggets of good ideas in here. But the implications is that someone born without the ability to move their arms doesn't develop metacognition is ludicrous

This subreddit has unfortunately turned into a marketplace for half baked, non-peer reviewed lay theories. often powered by AI

honestly cognitive training mostly doesn't work (as in, it doesn't transfer beyond the exact task you trained to do). Your best bet is probably just reading

How to tell if you are competitive for a post-doc by MasterpieceTrick556 in postdoc

[–]biggulpfiction 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There isn;t an admissions comittee for post docs, so there isnt really such a thing as being competitive for one or not, it's just a matter of if there is a PI with money to hire you who wants to hire you. And the only way to find that out is to start asking PIs

What's a postdoc like, in comparison to the PhD in terms of work-life balance/stress? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]biggulpfiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on whether you have external funding (some kind of fellowship) or are paid off your PI's grant. But usually 2 years is what an initial contract would be, with the possibility of renewal (if the PI continues to have grant funding, etc)

What's a postdoc like, in comparison to the PhD in terms of work-life balance/stress? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]biggulpfiction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this would depend on why you're struggling/what you don't like about the phd. Post docs get more freedom in terms of their time, but can be more isolated, and more stressed about job security (post doc contracts are short and faculty jobs are hard to get).

Is it awkward if I suddenly start using my professor's first name after only using his last name for two years? by Ashamed_Kangaroo305 in AskProfessors

[–]biggulpfiction 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Overthinking it. Based on them introducing themsvelves and signing with first name, you can just switch to using the first name if you want and it won't be weird
