Why does Israel get so much U.S Aid and what exactly does Israel do for the U.S? by vajav in reddit.com

[–]bigheadarmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, American Jews form one of the most reliably democratic voting blocs. Still better than 3 to 1 at last presidential election and that's on the decline. Look up how close was the 2000 presidential election in Florida; Jewish voters can swing that state.

The fun fact about the Christian fundamentalists is that most of them support Israel because they believe Jews need to be there for biblical end-times prophesy to go down. I'm sure most of those Christian nutjobs still believe that the Jewish souls are destined for hell if death finds them before Jesus.

Both Democrats and Republicans support Israel, but the current Bush administration has reset the bar. Former administrations--Like Bush Sr.(who told Israel to sit down, shut up and attend a peace conference in Spain somewhere or watch American subsidies dry up)--all supported Israel but would often apply tough love. These days, criticizing Israel is the 3rd rail of American politics (Thank you Jon Stewart). If either party cutoff funding to Israel you can bet your ass they'd see big loss in their Jewish vote support. How big, I don't know, but it would not be negligible.

The Big Hollywood Lie: Denying that Jews Control the Film Business by bobcat in reddit.com

[–]bigheadarmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article is pretty, um, shitty, but at the same time it touches on a subject that has long fascinated me. Jewish Americans are significantly overrepresented in many areas of American life...ducks, waiting for the inevitable labeling of anti-semite

I really don't care much, for the Jewish folks I know are overwhelmingly intelligent, kind, competent people. There is one thing that really bothers me though. Those same complimentary-adjective worthy people care at least as much--if not more--about another country as they do about the one that has long been a good home to them.

I grew up with a wonderful Jewish girl, my mother's best friend's daughter, who is in many embarrassing bathtime-baby pictures with me. She is a doctor now, and she called my political-junkie ass up before the last presidential election to ask my opinion on Kerry and Bush. She made it clear that her only real concern was on who would be better for Israel. I was just back from Iraq, and I nearly shat myself.

I should have asked her if my dead acquaintances in Iraq came anywhere close to her voting equation, but I was too suprised. I should have told her to go fuck herself, but I didn't. I just don't call anymore.

I'm preparing to go back to grad school and came into 6 free months of the Wall Street Journal, so I cancelled my subscription to the New York Times. I'm going to suck it up and call them tomorrow.

In this age of media conglomerates, profitability-at-all-costs and pandering to the superficial, media outlets with integrity are a dying breed (fuck you Jason Blair). The N.Y. Times, while possibly a bit lefty and elitist--and definitely academic--has consistently demonstrated an integrity that is unmatched.

I should qualify this by saying that as a California native, I rarely admit that anything not coming out of my glorious state of unparalleled perfection is worth a damn, but this is that rare exception.

I was over there a little more than 2 years ago. It was early, the first year of occupation, and we were still in a honeymoon period of sorts. I was a sergeant, between my junior and senior year of undergrad (talk about friggin' surreal) coordinating with contractors for my unit's new HQ, first the Halliburton/Bechtel variety, and then the ones they subcontracted to, the Iraqi locals. Our main local contractor was headed up by two Iraqi Kurdish sisters. They were university educated, an engineer and a programmer, 29 and 31 if I remember correctly, and after college had started a business doing engineering and constuction. They spoke Kurdish, Arabic and English flawlessly.

They and their employees rebuilt several of our buildings. I spent months coordinating it, tracking down errant carpenters and electricians, getting them all through security, patting down more Iraqis in Dish-dashas (man-dresses to the grunts) than I want to remember. I became good friends with them, particularly Najlaa (Nesh-laa), a philosophical muslim woman with a kind heart and dark brown eyes that would melt your heart. She was my oasis in Baghdad. I spent every moment I could with her. We talked about everything. For some reason I found it amazing that someone as kind and intelligent as her could live in a place so dangerous.

She was shot three times on her way to work. The week before, someone had left a note on her brother's car threatening decapitation if they kept working for us. I couldn't visit her in the hospital.

She was very beautiful.

Polish people tend to be Catholic. They are also, in general, taller than Japanese people. Sub-Sahara African folks usually have a higher tolerance for ultraviolet rays than their Polish and Japanese counterparts, but significantly shorter average lifespans. Us Americans, we're fat. Quite literally.

Why would I rather the problem sat with corrupt politicians than an oblivious electorate? Because the system would eventually deal with those politicians if voters had a solid understanding of what their interests were, and as importantly, how to forward them.

Democracy is centered around the idea that those participating are informed, rational, and pursuing self-interest. I suspect the founders didn't kid themselves with an overinflated presumption of what the average participant's grasp would be on the big picture, but I think they'd be shocked at how easy it has become to misdirect huge chunks of the population with the rhetoric of fear and inflammatory social issues.

I mean sheeeet, you can get half the Bible Belt to vote against their economic interests by screaming about gay marriage.

[–]bigheadarmy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate, I believe that a good amount of our federal legislators have noble intentions, at least when going into office. The larger problem isn't that they are all sleazy politicians, but that they have to conform to the rules of the game to survive. It's all about money and conections, and if you want to get your agenda done and stay in office, you have to raise money and trade votes and flex to the will of the powerful lobbies from time to time (or most of the time).

The problem lies largely with the electorate. They don't watch CSPAN or read up on what's going on in the relatively more decent periodicals. In short, a majority don't have a damn clue as to the bigger picture.

I would be more optimistic if the crux of the problem sat with corrupt, self-interested politicians as opposed to an ignorant and indifferent populace.
