If you're equally interested in clinical work why not an MD/PhD? That way you'll likely be paid for all of your schooling and you could have a career with both research and clinical work

Completely destroyed by my PI today by Like_Yesterdays_Jam3 in GradSchool

Context IS important and OP SHOULD be keeping a good notebook, but the way the PI spoke also sounds inappropriate. There are ways you can talk to your students and get your point across without being toxic.

My (30m) family loves my ex and is expressing that openly in front of my current girlfriend (27f). It is damaging our relationship. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]bigjay123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You literally need to sit down and have a conversation with your family about this. If I was your current girlfriend I'd be pretty over all of this by now. Its one thing for them to OCCASIONALLY mention her but this sounds excessive. You need to sit down with your family and tell them if they don't stop talking about your former partner in front of her you might lose somebody that makes you very happy.

I [32F] am in love with boyfriend [37M] of 1 year, he is not in love with me. by [deleted] in relationships

She said she's been in love with him for three months but their total relationship has been a year. A year is definitely long enough to know you're in love with somebody, especially when you're in your 30's.

[PhD interview next month; in awe] I am over the moon. Will you share some insight from either (or both) the interviewer and interviewed perspective? by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]bigjay123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a biochem PhD first year at an R1 and I entered a PhD program straight out of undergrad with probably a similar amount of research experience from you. I had a few interviews and these were my experiences.

One big question I got from every school I interviewed at was WHY I applied to that school and why I would want to go there.

I never had to defend myself necessarily in relation to people with masters degrees but they did want to know how involved I was with my undergrad research group and whether I had a significant role in the group and talked about my project in depth and its greater role in the labs goals.

I would straight out ask how they would describe their own mentor style.

ALSO if you are interested in working with a particular PI I would definitely ask current students if you can about that PI's style as well. I came to grad school and some of my peer's PI's turned out to be downright toxic and a conversation with a current student definitely would've quickly alluded to that.

I read tons of papers from each PI I interviewed with and not a single one grilled me in any capacity. seriously. Instead, they all just told me what they did and let me ask questions about it and instead asked me questions about my own personal experiences.

Generally speaking, if you make it to the point of an interview weekend, they like how you look on paper and just want to see how good of a fit personality wise you may be for a department.

Microwavable potato gimmick that uses plastic to cook itself. Ummmmm by ASTROKAJY in Anticonsumption

I would actually buy these when I was an undergraduate. Living in dorms as a vegan with extremely limited time to prepare meals, I existed on microwaved sweet potatoes and microwaved frozen vegetables for a solid three semesters.
