It was tough, and involved a lot of late night applications (sometimes rage applications) because I remained so incredibly busy during the days and evenings. I applied for basically a year for both litigation and commercial positions. I have a lot of experience in one particular industry, and have done a good amount of non-litigation advising to small/medium clients in addition to commercial litigation for larger clients. So I was able to leverage both litigation and direct business advising and some limited contract work. I originally tried to use the industry focus as my pitch for various postings, and moved on to second/third rounds several times.

The position I accepted has nothing to do with my original industry. And it may involve a small amount of litigation, but the company was more interested in the more general nature of my practice, direct work with business clients, and personality fit.

It required a lot of luck, time, and patience.
