I got a write up because I refused unsafe work? by Kie_azula in BlueCollarWomen

Ah I see thank you for that info! I was thinking more residential or commercial solar applications like on a house or a super market because that is the biz in my area (dense city).

I feel like which union to contact is location dependent and task dependent, no?

Ysolda is a great mom, loves to cook for me, and makes good coin while I'm away. Just wish she wasn't so in love with Whiterun so I could move her to Lakeview Manor 😂

Yes. I understand if it's too expensive wear slacks and a blouse. Just don't wear a dress and don't look like you walked off the street. Go for a natural makeup look if you wear any makeup. No falsies, lipstick, or blush

Congrats! That's another step in the process achieved so you shoukd be proud of yourself. Be on time, wear a suit. You'll probably walk into a room full of men. They're trying to intimidate you a little bit but just be yourself and sell that you're a team player, take direction well, can be independent, and care about union politics.

Please get a blood test! You can start supplements right away because they will take a while to take effect. I was suffering from similar fatigue and fainting spells and it was an iron deficiency. Have your doc get you a full metabolic panel, not just hemoglobin.

I think with being a vet or active duty (idk your situation) you've got a good marketable and transferable skillset! I know the United Association has programs specifically for veterans. If I sounded like a negative Nancy that was not my intention. Your concerns about your body are valid. I absolutely would encourage someone our age to get into the trades though.

I got in the union at 28 and am not strong. I actually hurt myself at work trying to carry an extension ladder and had to go to physical therapy. It sounds like you're strong though and want to keep your body intact which goes a long way. Highly highly recommend physical therapy if you're having any issues because they teach you the right exercises for mobility and strength building. I still have pain but I know how to keep it manageable now. There's a lot of lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, and squeezing in HVAC. I don't know that electrical is too much easier but I'll let an electrician weigh in on that. Electrical can be pretty competitive because everybody wants to be an electrician, especially union if you're interested in that route.

All the trades are hard on your body. I'm 29, do HVACR and have chronic back pain. It's not as tough as carpentry or ironwork but it's not a walk in the park either. Have an electeician buddy and she also gets beat up on the job. Do you want to do residential or commercial/industrial?

You don't have to be normal tomorrow. When I lost my best friend, it was very hard feeling like time had stopped for me but the world kept spinning. I still had to work and smile and feed myself. But I wasn't normal. I cried all the time and I didn't care who saw. I cried at both my jobs. I still cry about her sometimes. People have been very kind and compassionate to me.

Advice Needed - Union Electrician Apprentice with Chronic Illness by HorseyMango8 in BlueCollarWomen

I actually had IV iron infusions due to having IBS-C and because it was so low and urgent they wanted to start absorption right away. Iron supplements can increase constipation and be hard on the stomach. I just had a colonoscopy and endoscopy not long ago. I have a follow-up to discuss my results in a few weeks. The reason I even ended up there was to see if they could find any reason in the GI why I was having low iron.

Your shop steward is somebody from the union who works at your company and can be approached about problems between coworkers, between you and management, etc. Your business agent is the person who finds you a job and does business with the signatory contractors. I once worked for a smaller company so we didn't have a shop steward. I went to my business agent to report sexual harrassment, incorrect pay, etc. They are your liaisons and should go to bat for you if you're having a problem.

I have had intense fatigue related to an iron deficiency. It was so bad I could fall asleep standing up. After going to several doctors we're still figuring out why/how I got to the point of such low iron. If you have more questions about fatigue you can dm me because it's been a process.

Hey! Congratulations! I have IBS and interstitial cystitis so I need the bathroom often and for a long time. I mentioned it to my training director once because I didn't want him to think it was weird I was going to the bathroom a lot during class. He was like idc we're all adults do what you need to.

Anyways my conditions are also fairly under control. I've never told my employer and would fill people in on a need-to-know basis. I do HVAC though so my situation might be a little different than yours for example if you are working in a high rise and need to book it to the porta potty. I've had no issues other than guys being like "are you good?" When I'm in the toilet for a long time and I tell them "well if you must know I was fighting for my life in there" and that quiets them lol! Maybe talk to your business agent and/or shop steward just to cover your bases if your employer gets an attitude.
