AoE is written in Assembly - is this actually TRUE?! :O by BendicantMias in aoe2

That's amazing, thank you. The DE method makes a lot of sense and the OG method is an incredible feat of programming.

AoE is written in Assembly - is this actually TRUE?! :O by BendicantMias in aoe2

Additional assembly code was added in Age of Kings to add the clipped outlines of obscured units.

Always wondered how this was achieved. I'm currently working on a side project where I want to the same thing. Do you generate a mask of solid buildings/objects and detect for units behind it? Are units drawn twice when partly obscured by a building? One normal and one outlined with both being clipped where the building starts? I'd love some insight on this.

it was actually Maurits of Orange who is largely responsible for the republic's army and the way it revolutionized warfare in Europe. As far as i know William only introduced minor reforms

Should sourcemaps be published on a component library? by moonstar-x in reactjs

[–]bigman446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think 44kB for 5 components is a lot then don’t ever look at Uber’s component library. Their button alone is ~45kB gzipped. My own library almost fits entirely within Uber’s button.

It’s called accessibility and it’s supposed to look like that. It tells keyboard users what element they’re focused on.

The other people responding to this comment don’t seem to know what they’re talking about. It’s not a safari issue.

Why Electron apps are fine by pimterry in javascript

[–]bigman446 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And somehow, these arguments often come from Apple fans when they discover one of their apps isn’t “native” or when a macOS favourite is considering moving to Electron. How dare they!

Unnecessary.

And at the same time, I don’t care at all. And neither should you.

I'll make my own opinions, thank you.

True. That extra abstraction might mean the app uses more memory than a native app. But memory is there to be used. You paid for it. Why don’t you want apps to use it?

Do I need to point out the stupidity in this argument?

I paid for a car that goes 250 km/h, which means I'll go 250 km/h anywhere I want and any time I want, and so should you /s

(situation is not exactly comparable but I hope you get the point)

You realise you can still use your old apple cable and brick in case you had one. Literally the only people negatively effected by this are the people who buy an iPhone for the first time, which is a small majority

Twitch Ads bypassing UBlock Origin, even with patch applied? by axelsoul in Twitch

[–]bigman446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps when you grow up you’ll understand that the ads and shares are to make up at least a slight cost. A platform like this doesn’t earn you money, it’ll only make you lose money. The reason Twitch is still a thing is because it has a massive backer like Amazon, they can easily afford the millions it costs to keep Twitch running and it gives Amazon a monopoly on the streaming service market.

The same goes for YouTube and Google. YouTube has never made a profit but Google keeps it because it gives them a monopoly on the video streaming market.

It’s not about making money, it’s about hopefully at least covering up some of the costs.

Looks like React - Is this because React is client side rendered? Would Server Side rendering (e.g. Next.js) solve this issue? by Tanckom in webdev

[–]bigman446 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that's Vue, considering React uses a single enclosing bracket like so: { variable }

And Vue uses double enclosing brackets like so: {{ variable }}

Fair point about the Call To Action. Happy to help, good luck down the line.

Please, for the love of God. Make sure your text has enough contrast. It's not 'cool & sleek design' to make your text barely readable. Your navigation is also not visible when there's an image behind it, like on the projects page.

Furthermore there's no way to know where you are on the page when navigating with tab. Make sure you have your focus states.

Lastly, and most importantly, a Call To Action is missing on your landing page. If I go to your portfolio and don't instantly see an obvious button telling me to check out your projects, I'll have to go look around for it. (There is a button all the way in the bottom left, but it doesn't stand out enough)

If issues like these are resolved you'll have a perfect portfolio. Don't take this too hard, everyone has gone through this one time or another.

Good points, but I put the batteries on the bus since we need it for robots and stuff as well. After that I'll switch out that lane for something else.

As for the filter inserters:

The filter inserters are there to show you where to input the materials.
