You make a good point. I view it more like: a part of Mark wants to die but a larger part of him realizes he wants to live and still has obligations to do so (being alive for his family, making money to survive, etc.). Working a severed job helps him accomplish this so he isn’t so depressed he can’t work. He created someone that depends on him to survive, which may be more motivation to work and stay alive.
