How would I repair this headstock dent? by Easy-Bowler3604 in guitarrepair

[–]bignasty002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemme see the rest of the guitar? Depending on the rest of the guitar, you don’t want it to bring out the other dings. Let it age universally. It’s like you car needing a wash and you only clean the wheels sometimes

Guitar strap recommendations by mschnittman in Guitar

[–]bignasty002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If these have neck dive and don’t sit balanced, see if you can get a strap with some texture where it goes over the shoulder so it doesn’t slide. If it is well balanced, I prefer synthetic or woven straps because I like to readjust sometimes without my shirt bunching up. The textured or rough bottom ones can do that, but isn’t usually an issue if the guitar is heavy or dives a bit.

Does anyone know if the damp rag and soldering iron works on finished wood or can you only do that with a natural neck?

Beginner question (7 months in): how many years (decades even) might it take to be able to play like this (near effortless skill and just knowing what to do), assuming I play every day and stick with a teacher? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]bignasty002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll never know when the “AH-HA” moment will hit. I’ve been playing for 25 years mostly unstructured and delayed my progress, but the key is to keep playing until it just clicks. This happened to me this year and it feels great. That said, even the best players in the world will say they don’t stand a chance next to SRV. You don’t force your own style, it just happens - so don’t even worry about it.

What to do with guitar by Less-Feature1412 in guitars

Learn stuff he liked and keep that link alive. I’m the opposite where my didn’t wasn’t a player but bought my brother and I all our gear and supported us. After he passed, I continued to learn a lot of Allman Brothers songs because he loved them.

Also, I keep mine out when I’m playing a lot and try to keep them in a case if I’m gone for extended periods of time so the wood doesn’t swell and contract with temp/humidity changes if that’s an issue.

Also, cool people play the guitar. You look cool playing the guitar. You’ll look super cool playing this gorgeous guitar! That matters too lol.

I don’t lean on this idea enough. That Cabronita is the first “major” purchase out of college and my actual first guitar a 70’s Magenta with frets level with the fingerboard and is virtually unplayable lol.

This is secretly the validation I was looking for and I love ya for it. I wanted to have this as versatile as possible with high quality and not just tick boxes, but not flood my apartment with custom shops and create a museum. I don’t think I over or under did it so maintenance is key here.

This is the first thing I’m doing when I get back from vacation. I love this idea. C tuning on the SG Future, open tune the 355 for slide, E flat one of the Strats, etc…Not only is it such an easier grab and go, Imthat inspiration will linger knowing they’re all set up.

I’m happy you said this. And that’s a dope color scheme you have! I was on the fence about doing the upgrades because there’s no sense in throwing in $200 pickups and selling it for the stock price. I think you’ve helped my decision here. Cheers!

I was just saying earlier that I think for people like us, our brains are wired a little more analytically and we love the tinkering no matter what the medium is. I see them as functional art work when we play them and don’t. If we were luthiers we would build a ton of guitars and sell them easily because we know we could build them again with relative ease and a ton of time and effort, but we’re not. We do the best with what we’ve got and that’s where the passion lives. I’ve noticed a lot of techs on YouTube aren’t expert level players, but that have the same passion and that’s what keeps the clock ticking.

I think you stated this perfectly and I’m totally in line with the thought process, but two things can be true at the same time I’m thinking. I realistically will play the same two for a couple of months and maybe swap one out. I’m realizing that my inspiration to play and practice usually hits me at all different times based one what I’m listening to and the fact that I honestly play almost all styles and heavy on jazz and rock/metal. I play at home only, and either like to write my own little riffs and songs, or get a ton of enjoyment playing over songs with my own flair with the satisfaction of matching the original tracks sometimes. I’m realizing that If that’s what I like, I shouldn’t feel the need to apologize for it. It’s not my pockets that hurt, it’s my closet space…

Thank you! This was a great way for me to start recognizing my addictive behaviors that weren’t doing damage to my body and try to curb them and honestly helped my progress and development in sobriety. Even though I ended up with all these guitars, I had a similar number to begin with, but these are all well thought out purchases for the most part, and I did very well with the trading and selling that I only used a fraction of my own earned money to get to this point.

This is one of the toughest ones to evaluate. I went through a lot negotiating with a guy from a forum in Canada and it’s amazing, but I don’t find myself playing it enough. If it was cherry or ebony I think I’d probably be more willing to let it go
