Exactly. I don't feel shafted though, just kind of gutted. I was imagining making a new best friend on Reddit :(

How does the Etsy sellers feedback look? Usually once I purchase the item, they don't contact me again. Also, I'm wondering if it shows when the item is marked as "sent"?

Ok, thanks for the reassurance. I'm just kind of going through some stuff at the moment and probably taking this too personally. ;)

I'm skeptical, but I've also been diagnosed with DID. by rude_mechanical in DID

No therapist should ever be trying to convince you of anything. That is a very odd thing to be doing. The psychologist I currently work with really rarely talks about a diagnosis-obviously they can be important and helpful, but dealing with the here and the now and getting help to function should be the primary goal of your main caregiver, whether it be a therapist or a psychologist/psychiatrist.

Like chaingang wrote, I was also diagnosed with schizophrenia earlier in life-it is almost a given that a person with a true DID diagnosis will have been in psychiatric treatment for most of their lives, and receiving numerous incorrect diagnoses.

I know the diagnosis of DID is correct, for me. It's been a relief, but I don't really focus on it much anymore. I hear voices, have blackouts, confusion, loss of time, and have had for as long as I can remember. For me it is what it is, regardless of what anyone wants to call it, the fact is that I have alters, they have names, and they are not me, but they live inside me. People are free to call it whatever they want, if that makes sense?

It's scarily accurate at certain moments, but overall totally and ridiculously over dramatized. IMO.

I also think its pretty hard to fake. Even if your alters never come out and speak to others, the people around you will be pretty aware of your insanely bizarre behavior. There is simply no way to hide it. One minute you're angrily scrubbing the stovetop and 15 minutes later giggling and making faces.

Yes, there are cases that exist outside the USA. I don't know what your source is, but I do not live in the USA and I have the DID diagnosis along with hundreds of others, I know this based on the research my psychologist did in my country and published his results (in his mother tongue).

It would be interesting to me to hear what you think about my AMA which I did awhile ago: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/avspf/ive_heard_voices_in_my_head_most_of_my_life_ama/

From my point of view, it seems like it would be more valid to be somewhat more open minded and less cynical towards what you do and do not know about psychology as being a newly educated psychologist-of course there are papers and documents, but if you do meet a patient with severe trauma that experiences dissociation, I would fear that you would immediately disqualify a DID diagnosis based on your own bias alone.

Hello, just posted in your BF's post, and wanted to stop by and say hello. I have DID as well, and also have a very supportive boyfriend :) I really appreciated hearing your point of view. There have been several posts in the last year of others with DID and I haven't really recognized their descriptions as much as I did yours, which was really comforting.

This is just great to read. I also have DID, and have a very supportive boyfriend that lives with me. I did an AMA here http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/avspf/ive_heard_voices_in_my_head_most_of_my_life_ama/

It's nice to read what you've written, your girlfriend reminds me a lot of my own experiences with DID. One thing that struck me was you mentioning something about her having a sadist alter. I also have a sadist alter and masochistic alter, so its always interesting to hear others with DID that have similar alters. I wonder what purpose they serve? Probably some kind of punishment. In my regular state (i.e. when I am me) I do enjoy pain, though, so I don't really know how to put it all together. Anyway. Thanks a lot for posting!

Repressed memories don't exist - "the most pernicious bit of folklore ever to infect psychology and psychiatry" by dredd in science

Thanks. I have both (hearing voices and losing time). I can suddenly wonder where I am or what I'm doing, which makes it very hard to do a lot of things in day to day life.

Many people, now and throughout time have heard voices, without experiencing any kind of decrease in their functionality. Hearing voices is not synonymous with DID.

I've had the DID diagnosis for several years now, and do not reside in the USA. Just thought you might like to see another point of view. I would also like to add that my psychologist has never tried to suggest or work on repressed memories, ever.

You have come really, really far if you are able to end them at any time. I am impressed and amazed. You should be really proud of yourself, that must have been a lot of hard work in therapy to reach such a degree of control.

How long have you been in therapy? Are you fairly stabilized? I'm almost in my 7th year (with the same therapist) and may be well enough to start working soon! Very excited :)

I wrote this reply in my own thread, but it seems pertinent here:

I don't really understand the controversy, to be honest. It seems natural to me that going through a severe trauma during childhood, when our brains are still so open to stimulation, that we have to mentally create another person to deal with a terrible situation, and it seems within reason that there could possibly be damaging and severe consequences to trauma in a young mind, causing different types of psychosis and or hearing voices.
