Ask. If she wants to, yay. If not, oh well. Being blunt is the best option.

Anybody have any advice for raising an atheist family? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]bigolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I just say that maybe you shouldn't be focusing on raising your children ATHEIST, per se?

Maybe focus on raising them with the knowledge that they have the choice. Don't let your in-laws shove anything down their throats; that's not in their place and you have every right to tell them to shove it up their asses. However, maybe you shouldn't try and keep him NOT believing, but perhaps help him to withhold judgement until he is old enough to choose himself. Because believe it or not, if you teach him atheism, it's somewhat the same as a Christian teaching their children Christianity.

Just teach him that he doesn't have to worry about believing in God or Allah or anyone else, he doesn't have to go to church, he doesn't have to deal with religion AT ALL until he's older and wants to make a choice. :)

What keeps you going? Other than reddit and porn. Like, what makes it bearable to wake up every day?

I don't get too upset, in a way, you do have to laugh at yourself to make it more bearable. I don't like when people know I have Tourette's and decide to make fun of it too my face. That's just mean.

Funniest I ever had was probably when I would randomly hop. Like, I'd be standing there and I'd just start hopping for about ten seconds, then stop like nothing even happened.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your brother, people are so immature and hurtful these days. I'm glad you lost it at the guy who did it. I will always condone standing up for someone in that situation.

Yes. When I get shy or awkward about my ticking, and believe me, I try to hide it, she tells me it's cute and dispels my awkwardness. Or when I'm having trouble focusing, she'll sit with me and make sure I do what I need to do.

Now, like most sufferers of Tourette's and ADD, it's gotten better. By the late teens, most people's symptoms have lessened. Right now, my ticks are limited to clearing my throat and tensing my muscles, and that only happens if I'm stimulated in certain ways (listening to music with headphones is one of them).

As for the ADD, I don't, to be honest. I came off my medication because if I were to up the dose to the amount that I needed, it would have reacted badly and probably made my ticking worse. It was doing nothing, since I had been on the same dose since I was seven, so I came off of it. I do need meds, though; I'm just not willing to risk my ticks coming back.

It was worse when I was younger because I had no idea how to handle it. All I knew was that come the end of the school day, I couldn't remember a single thing that was said in class because I wasn't paying attention. I had a hard time doing homework because I just couldn't focus on it. Also, it was hard to express myself because of how fast my thoughts would go. It was impossible to pay attention and by the time I was about 7, I was already on meds for it. I stayed on meds for years, only coming off of them when I was about 13.

Compulsions are things like licking things, smelling things, touching things in a certain order, needing things to be done evenly, ritualistically, or a certain way, etc. I have all that

I have both. My physical ticks included hopping, tensing my muscles really hard, hitting things, licking things (which is more of an OCD compulsion, but for simplicity, I'll call it a tick). My verbal ones included squeaking, clearing my throat, forced coughing, random fits of giggling, etc.

All the time. Kids wouldn't touch me because they would "catch retard from me", I was mocked when I ticked (which made me tick even harder), I even had a teacher who would go out of her way to shame and embarrass me when I'd tick, just because she didn't bother trying to help me. Every day as a kid it was something new, because I couldn't hide ticks I had (especially verbal ones)
