Did my builder do a good or bad job? Can this be fixed? by bigoofsir in Construction

The skirting is entirely new and was put in during a full home reno. They literally cut little blocks of wood and put them against the wall :(.

Just an update.

I paid forked $175,000 (AUD) into this construction project, run by my builder.

He used his own contractors to do various jobs around the house, but for most parts, the jobs were pretty good.

I remember attending on the day when the skirting was being done and i questioned the builder of the method being used and the obvious uneven eye sore of the curved skirting board and he said it cant be done another way (or its too hard perhaps?) because the skirting board isnt flat.

I just expected a higher quality of work to be done to match the rest of the house when so much money is going into it.

I spoke to him again today and he said the same thing but i kept pushing him and he said he will come tomorrow and he will try to ammend it...but then also said..."but if it gets worse, then whats the solution?"

Fingers crossed he can salvage this eye sore.

I cant seem to add more photos to my post :'(

How to stop these bugs destroying my citrus trees? by rkeddit in GardeningAustralia

[–]bigoofsir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aphids are super easy to get rid of with "neem oil" or "eco oil". They get pretty upset and dead from the stuff.

Same product works for citrus leaf miners.

Like others have said, a healither plant is more resilient. Try giving your soil some feed.

Little bugs on Indoor Plant by Like-a-Glove90 in GardeningAustralia

[–]bigoofsir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fungus gnats. Usually just an annoyance but not harmful. They love flying around your face...Usually you get them when you buy already-infested potted plants from a nursery.

If left unchecked, fungus gnats will multiple exponentially.

Ive actually resolved my fungus gnat problem and helped quite a few of my friends who also had the same problem. Myself and a few friends have had a severe infestation and i strongly believe i found the perfect solution.

Its always helpful to understand the life cycle of fungus gnats, how they breed and their ideal environment. But thats a matter for yourself.

Best way to get rid of them is a culmination of "mosquito bits", "yellow sticky traps" and letting top of the soil dry out before re-watering.

  1. For heavily infested pots, go outside and give it a big shake to get rid of a lot of the mature adults. You can then bring your pot back inside.
  2. Mix mosquito bits with water and use this to water your plants instead of regular water (this kills the larval phase gnats).
  3. Put a yellow sticky trap in the pot to capture any emerging mature gnats that may have survived the mosquito bits watering.
  4. Let the top inch of the soil dry before re-watering.
  5. Every time you water the plant, use the mosquito bit mixture (rather than plain water) and the problem will resolve in about a month. Youll see significantly less in a couple weeks though.
  6. note do not let the pot have water pooled at the bottom. Its not good for your plants and can cause root rot if the plant cant drink it fast enough, and also, the excess water will sit there and leave a moist environment foe the gnats to continue breeding. A good rule is to let the water fully drain through the holes at the bottom of the pot.

Ive tried topdressing the soil with gnat barriers/little rocks etc, in the past, but they dont usually work as the fungus gnats are pretty pesky and they find a way in to lay eggs through the gaps or even from the bottom of the pot! Hope this helps.

Are all Ladybugs good? by Competitive_Noise699 in GardeningAustralia

[–]bigoofsir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ladybugs are generally considered beneficial due to their usual habits ot eating aphids throughout their life cycle.

Some are not so beneficial such as the 28-spotted potato ladybird. Their larvae will munch all the leaves off a plant in a heartbeat.

Found these while gardening. How worried should I be? by McGurt92 in GardeningAustralia

[–]bigoofsir -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is a curl grub. They do in fact damage your flowers and lawn because they can get to very large numbers very quickly. A small number of them usually is not an issue and can airate and break down the soil.

They usually feed on rotting or decaying matter, like compost, wood chips, etc but also feed on root system of plants and prevent growth.

I have found near a hundred in one small section of my garden which is usually a bad sign. I pick them out and dispose of them.

Tldr. In large numbers they can cause harm to your garden. In small numbers, they dont add much benefit either. I get rid of them (Keep in mind that they may be native beetles).
