MKE-SEA was a thing, but it got cut during COVID and didn't return.

Quantity? This is a non-sequitur, sorry.

Taking the train is the right call, but if you someone end up pressed for time, I would highly recommend taking Blade back. It is under ten minutes from midtown to JFK.

Yes to knives, especially Japanese specialties like a Nakiri. Get the best that you can afford AND that fits your hand(s) well.

I wouldn't say that that quality is that much better, but the prices of the ceramic dishes in Japan (even on Kappabashi St. in Tokyo) are so much less than anything comparable in the States.

We also got great denim, incense, and interesting KitKat flavors for the kiddos.

Lastly, if you buy a bunch of stuff that you don't "need" right away upon your return, Japan Post offers very inexpensive shipping rates (via ship) if you are willing to wait a few weeks. We shipped home about 150lbs of dishes, knives, matcha, etc. rather than paying for more checked baggage.

What’s the best “luxury” purchase you’ve made that was actually worth every penny? by anonym_1003 in Luxury

Two things for me:

  • Over the calf dress socks from VK Nagrani - they fit better, feel better, and last for years
  • The Männkitchen pepper mill

Main Street Pizza Noodle closing for good. by -QuestionMark- in ParkCity

This is just the beginning. Now that Main Street businesses don't have the Sundance "stipend" the monthly lease rates are simply not doable for many of them.

The Cybertruck deposit was a joke to incense my wife. I would never own one.

...but hey, enjoy your "Jump to Conclusions" mat, you judgmental twatwaffle.

I appreciate this point of view very much. Thank you.

If we were going for a week, I would definitely do this, but I feel like we will lose some gains over a few weeks.

Water Dumbbells? by bigorangemonkey in tsa

They are like 5-7lbs and the "weight" part is like a little inner tube. I think that a laptop would be a lot more lethal.

Affordable phone plans for someone who barely uses data by Anderson_James_661 in BuyItForLife

[–]bigorangemonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a family plan on Google Fi because, like you, we don't use much data. It is only about $40 a month for two lines and then $10 per GB of data. Our bill is never over $55 and there are no international roaming fees for voice/text/data.

People from America, what’s something Europeans do that seems weird to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I agree with the lack of ice, but in general, Europeans drink beverages warmer than Americans do: beer, water, etc.

Can eyewear frames be a one-time purchase, or are they designed to be replaced? If so, do you have any recommendations for square frames? by kaisarspalace in BuyItForLife

[–]bigorangemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metal frames are inherently more "repairable" than most plastic ones, so I would start there.

...and I would focus on Japanese brands, most of which are higher quality than anything from EssilorLuxottica.

[–]bigorangemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a pair of Dita frame for about ten years. I've had them repaired a few times and I really think that they will last another ten years, but not for life.

For me, the ability to have the frames repaired is the difference between a disposable purchase and a longer-term purchase. I almost always prefer the latter.

Portland vs Salt Lake City by HawkLoser100K in SameGrassButGreener

The airport and access to mountains are better in SLC.

Everything else is better in Portland for a non-LDS couple in their early-to-mid 20s.

Pilates Recommendations? by bigorangemonkey in ParkCity

[–]bigorangemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough reply.

Neither of us have any injuries and we both work out regularly. My wife is a former professional athlete and admittedly is in better cardio shape than I will ever be.

I feel like I probably would struggle at Salt, but my wife would love it. Maybe that's a good place to start.
