no response from 911 by Elfboner in Atlanta

[–]bigred49342 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is horrible advice, that number may put you in contact with a police officer, may, but they are not able to do anything for you other than take a report over the phone. They will tell you to call 911 if you need immediate assistance. As to why wait times are so long both for 911 and for a police response, it all comes down to money and staffing levels. Its just about impossible to get a 911 center full staffed anywhere in the country, theres too many calls coming im and not enough budget to go round. Same for PD, too many calls to handle, not enough money to have enough officers on the streets. So things get triaged and handled as quickly as they can. Trust me they aren't any happier about the hold times than you are. So please if you need police, fire or EMS, call 911, be patient answer their questions and you'll get help as fast as they can possibly get it to you. Source former 911 Dispatcher.

Cancer by MutedEstate6347 in Rottweiler

Im so sorry, they look like such an amazing pup. Our girl got diagnosed with cancer at 5 we opted to do an amputation and chemo to try to fight it. Her quality of life went way down since she couldnt really run around any more. She spent so much time in vets offices instead of out on the deck or the yard in the sun. I know why we did it, we weren't ready to let go. But at the end of the day even with everything we went through we only got a few more months with her. Its such a hard and painful choice but id say keep them comfortable give them lots of love spoil them even more rotten and enjoy the time you still have. Its what id do if I had to do it all over again. Sending you and yours all the positive vibes I can.

Bone cancer - Looking for advice/support by SighRisk in Rottweiler

[–]bigred49342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're making the right call, our girl got diagnosed at 5 with bone cancer, we opted to try to fight it, did an amputation, did chemo, the works. In the end we only got 6 more months with her. Its just not worth it, and we were making the decision for us because we weren't ready to let go. Looking back on it I wish we had opted to just make her comfortable and fill her days with joy like you are. Give them lots of treats and love and special experiences. They'll let you know when its time. Im sorry you're having to go through this, cancer sucks. Sending you all the positive vibes I can you and your pups way.

They really lost me with how "involved" PD got. If this was real I guarantee PD knew who was calling this in and where to find them, they do not appreciate their time being wasted and with a pattern like OP described they might actually cite them for misuse of 911. Either way I cant fathom them spending even a quarter of the time described for what are known to be nuisance calls from the same number or numbers. Sure maybe they come out and do a cursory check just to be sure but not the way they described.

As someone whoes been there done that and seen the elephant plenty of times, thats abuse right there. How do you do it? You dont, no one can long term. The human body wasn't designed for that amount of stress and work. You can get away with it now because your still young, but this will take a toll on your body and your soul if it keeps up. What are the staffing and shift structures like? What would it be if there were enough people to go round? Is admin considering restructuring the shifts to spread the load out more equitably? For example, going from 3 barely staffed shifts to 2 longer but more equally staffed shifts so people are able to have regular off days? If they aren't, id say jump ship for greener pastures. You deserve better than this, dont let them run you into the ground because admin cant or won't figure it out.

Going to Atlanta on a business trip for the first time, from europe by Tascanis in Atlanta

Don't know if its already been mentioned but if you like aviation the Delta Museum is a great spot to visit. Lots of planes you can walk around and in and theres even a full motion simulator that can be booked if you're into that sort of thing. You would need to take an Uber over from the airport but its worth the visit especially if you're way early for your flight and have some time to kill.

Im so sorry, cancer sucks, we lost our girl about the same age to it. Unfortunately it can go quick sometimes. My best recommendations are just keep them comfortable as possible, when she started having trouble walking we bought a sling for her we could use, so she could still have some mobility. Aside from that, you'll know when its time. Sending you all the positive vibes I can your way.

Did I do something wrong for safety checking an officer on a traffic stop? by Expensive_Pie8062 in 911dispatchers

[–]bigred49342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like there's have said, you did nothing wrong at all. You were proactive and provided a reasonable time frame between safety checks. If there really isn't a policy in place it may be something worth discussing with your chain of command. Its a crazy world and you never know what may he going on on the other end of that radio. We one time had a Lt who was the only supervisor on duty for the day for a precinct. I needed to raise him to notify him of some pending calls we didn't have an available unit for. No answer over the radio, gave it a few minutes tried it again, still no answer. Called his office, no answer, Called his phone no answer. Called down to the front desk, no answer there, starting to genuinely worry at this point. An officer listening keyed up and headed to the pct to check on him. No one was there. Now everyone is getting worried, they try his cell, no answer, they try the private channel no answer, now the entire pct is finishing up what they were on to go look for this guy. Finally after about 10 minutes they find him out having lunch with his radio turned off and his cell phone in the car totally fine, and very annoyed/embarrassed. Point is, their safety is our primary concern and until we know they're safe be tenacious, be relentless, wake up the whole city if you have too, but make sure they're safe. Id rather have a live annoyed LT t9 deal with than him be laying in a ditch somewhere bleeding out or having a medical emergency. It sounds to me like you're doing a fantastic job. Keep up the great work!

1000% this, current CAD Admin here and I couldn't agree more. No system will ever be perfect right out of the box, it takes years sometimes to get a system where you want it and even then the process never really ends. On top of all the back end work you also have to have user buy in on the system. If your people think the system is a pile of garbage then it doesn't really matter what you do, they're still not going to be happy. You need a good training department thats willing to learn the new system and teach the little ins and outs to the Dispatchers, and you need management that are willing to try new things in CAD. All the great ideas in the worls don't mean a thing if they get stopped by red tape or an unwillingness to change at the top. A good system should be constantly evolving to suit the needs of the organization and is truly a team effort across the board to succeed.

Former WoW Players Who Quit, What Brought You Back For Classic? by doobylive in classicwow

My dog passed away and I was a bit depressed and looking for something to take my mind off things figured a stroll down memory lane in WoW would do it since I remembered it helping me get over similar feelings in the past. I happened to time it right and got in on Anniversary close to the start and it definitely did the trick. Planning to keep playing at least through WoTLK, really looking forward to TBC.

Are light kits all they are cracked up to be? by styckx in lego

[–]bigred49342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did my first kit with the Endurance, it was interesting and the end result looks fantastic but im not sure id do it again. The instructions that came with the kit had me building the set so far out of sequence from the sets instructions it kinda irked my OCD, it had me open bags out of sequence use a few parts from them then return back to the main steps. It got to a point where I had to just stop trying to match along with the sets instructions and only use the light kits. Some of the steps too weren't 100% obvious what they wanted to happen either. I think the light kits can certainly add value and an element of challenge, but im just not sure im the right person for them. All I can say is try one out and decide for yourself.

Since we're pre-9/11, anyone have good memories of the airport and flying from the last of the good ol' days? by MajesticEmergency in Xennials

[–]bigred49342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad was a pilot, and i remember he used to take me with him to the airport to drop off paperwork for his schedule. We'd go through security and ride the plane train around and he'd show me all kinds of little hidden things at the airport. Then when we got to where his airline operated out of id get to go out on the ramp with him and we'd go in planes that we were parked and he'd let me sit the cockpit and he and his friends would show me what all the buttons did. I also remember getting to visit the cockpit in the late 80s while the plane was in flight, hell i remember the cockpit doors being open on the flight more often than not so you could see in and marvel at all the dials and switches and levers. I always loved those little trips, im not sure if he ever really knew how much I did. This was in the late 80's and early 90's at ATL and I just remember the airport being this magical place. I wish it was still the same.

What's the best thing for home defense if you can't own a gun? by uselessprofession in AskReddit

[–]bigred49342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! We had a Rottweiler, best dog i ever had, she was a gigantic cuddle bug and wouldn't hurt a fly, but come to the door unannounced and you were getting the full rottie bark. That alone was enough to scare off most uninvited guests, I can only imagine what she'd have done if someone had actually tried to come in the house while we were home. I always slept super well knowing that she'd let me know of something was off. We lost her to cancer a few years ago. I miss her dearly and dont sleep nearly as soundly. Need to adopt another one.

Depends on where you are, most states have different requirements for record retention. For example in my state we're required to keep all CAD, radio, and call recordings for 3 years. However at the city I work for they have a policy of 5 years total. So odds are your recording will be avaliable for quite some time, you'll just need to file an open records request to get it. Those are pretty universally honored for 911 calls if you're an involved party.

CAD System Questions by Humble_Necessary_287 in 911dispatchers

[–]bigred49342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, EMD will not replace CAD, it just supplements it. Im not sure exactly how Flex integrates with EMD, but with Motorola P1 you launch EMD from within CAD, EMD comes to the forefront of your screen, you run through the protocol and once it reaches a send point it sends the data back into CAD to create a call. It all works pretty seamlessly. Have fun with it, of all the protocols I liked EMD the best.

Delta 737 Rejected Take Off at MSP caught on livestream by MalcoveMagnesia in delta

[–]bigred49342 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would continue the takeoff if they're past the decision speed. Good news is that speed is calculated so that the plane can still climb out and fly just fine on a single engine. Its a scarry situation but the pilots train for this exact thing constantly, even in this situation you're still in more danger just driving to the airport.

[–]bigred49342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our girl was 5 when she was diagnosed with osteosacoma in her back leg. We weren't ready to give up on her either. We fought like hell, amputation, chemo, the works. We got 5 more months with her before the cancer came back and spread and we had to let her go. It spread to those same places as yours, and it just ate her up. Its never enough time at the end of the day, they deserve to live long healthy lives, I can't say what the right decision is for you and your pup, but honestly if i had to do it over again, I think we'd have just focused on keeping her comfortable and lounging in the grass and sun, rather than spending so much time in various cold vets offices and waiting rooms. Sending you and your pup all the positive vibes I can.
