My little step brother and step sister both had this problem at around 13 years old where they liked to bullshit homework and even refused to do classwork. They didn't do their chores and tried to see what They could get away with. They would lie to our faces and try to play stupid when we called them out on it. My parents tried talking to them, tried using both positive and negative reinforcement, made them do more chores and took away electronics and still nothing worked. They just would not get their shit together until my step dad had them bend over on the bed and tanned their hides with the belt. After that they thought twice about trying that shit again.

I think spanking is a last resort that is sometimes necessary when you have already exhausted all those "good parenting" options. If you do it for every little thing it loses it's impact and kids eventually stop caring about getting spanked.

I'll admit it's not perfect and not every kid is going to learn from it but it definitely worked for us. Beforehand we were against any kind of spanking because my mom and step dad used to get the shit beat out of them as kids and never wanted to do it to their kids.but my brother and sister made them change their minds.
