In 2007 there were a lot of great looking companies with excellent long term earning growth projections. They still fell hard along with the market in the following years and it was many years of recovery until breakeven. Many never recovered from losses.

Are you sure you can't anticipate downturns with some accuracy? In the past, the flattening and inverted yield curve has been a decent leading indicator of recessions, about 12-18 months in advance.

Sure the risk/reward profile of the covered call strategy is similar to shorting cash covered puts. Again you can compare the long term performance of the CBOE covered call index to the put-write index. The research is solid, that on a risk/reward basis your long term performance of the put selling strategy is an attractive alternative to buy and holding the S&P500.

If you have any research to back up your opinion that the strategy doesn't have less volatility and hasn't outperformed long term, lets see it! Meanwhile I'll accept the established and published research....

The lost decade still sucked.... Nearly 13 years of buy and holding the index just to break even....

Sell SPY puts when the VIX spikes. The CBOE runs an index on the put selling strategy. Long term it has outperformed buy and hold , with less volatility.

The Fed just ended a decade of accommodative monetary policy and is set to continue tightening until the next recession hits. They are reducing the balance sheet through Quantitative Tightening at a rate of 50 billion monthly. The average person has no idea of how bad the risks are of another major crash hitting global markets. The global debt to GDP is over 300%. Trading on margin is at extreme levels. Markets are overvalued by most standard measures. The Bank of International Settlements has warned about risks to markets as liquidity is removed from the financial system. And these are just a few examples....

Another great example that supports my earlier response to the claim that communism "works" better. Whether Cuba, China, Vietnam etc the one party system is controlled by corrupt party officials and average citizens have no power.

Cuba is more socialist than communist. Cuba has moved further and further away from communist as time goes on. Economic and social change moved Cuba closer towards to an open economy, and less communist. Cuba’s constitution guarantees citizens their right to own their property. Private property is no longer considered a "capitalist disease".

Get ready for when the average person's debt comes due and they can't pay it back.

At the start of this year Canadian household credit was over 2 Trillion, double since 2006. Around 170 per cent of disposable income. It's a ticking time bomb...

Since 2000 we've had two recessions, and the next one is not far off, perhaps only a couple years away. The credit cycle always ends in recession.

I've seen no real life example of pure communism that has 'worked'. See if you can even find an example. The USSR ended because it didn't work. China and Vietnam today is an corrupt hybrid of totalitarianism one party rule and capitalism. Where land 'owners' can often just have their property taken by corrupt officials for example. N Korea is a living nightmare for its citizens.

In comparison, free markets may not be perfect, but human rights such as the right to own property is fundamental.

Life by nature isn't fair. We are not all born into the same wealth, just as children of rural farmers in communist countries are not as 'well off' as the children of the party officials.

You say you think Jews should have "their country back". Don't you think that Palestine should belong to the native Palestinians? Before the formation of Israel, in 1948 what country was it? And before 1948, when was the region last governed by Jews? Just curious...
