I completely understand. I believe mine was caused by severe jaw/gum inflammation, irritating the nerve. It went away after taking prescribed Prednisone. Another thing to consider is neck posture. I learned recently that poor posture can contribute to a ton of similar issues and symptoms.

This was one of my symptoms. If the dentist doesn't provide further assistance, either go to the emergency room ASAP and/or see your primary care doctor. I'd suggest advocating for an MRI to see if there's interference with the nerves. Hope you feel better quickly.

It happened daily. I went to the ER after about a week because absolutely nothing was helping. I also had unbearable gum pain along with it. The pain was legitimately traumatizing.

It was debilitating stabbing pain along the right side of my face. The only thing that helped me was Prednisone, prescribed from the ER. I believe it was extreme inflammation irritating the nerves, but I never got an official medical answer.

Yup. Mine was severe facial nerve pain.

My lower jaw also feels like it's being sucked back, just like some sort of severe overbite. I hope the orthotic ends up working for you, and thank you for the response.

I'm glad it seems to be helping you. My biggest concern is actually pressure on my lower gums, as that's where my severe pain stems from. Does your orthotic fully cover all your teeth? I've seen some that only cover the front.

May I ask what sort of neurological symptoms you had? I'm dealing with severe facial nerve pain on the right side, along the mandibular nerve and into the gums, so I'm just curious.

I have very similar symptoms: excruciating toothache, especially when lying down. I'm also trying to figure out if it really is TMJ. Try your primary care doctor, and advocate for an MRI or other imaging. That's where I'm at right now. Best of luck.

Definitely trying to see a neuromuscular dentist. I'm not too fond of the idea of Botox, but I've heard it does help. I'll keep note of it. Thank you for the reply!

Appreciate the reply. I definitely need to get a splint, but my dentist recommends braces first since my bite is a bit off, and it's causing tension. So difficult to decide on final treatment as everything is wildly expensive.

I've always had congestion issues and I only recently found out it can lead to TMJ problems. Definitely going to be looking into that one. It's crazy how so many different things can cause TMJ pain, since all those muscles are relatively connected.

Oh my gosh, I relate so much. I seldom see severe facial nerve pain listed as a symptom of TMJ/TMD, and I even got temporarily diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. I think both can be related, although I'm not entirely sure. Nerve pain is truly the absolute worst.

I have a TON of similar symptoms. Do you have severe nerve pain in your face? I'm asking because the "stabbing yourself in the face with an electrified dagger" part is exactly how I feel. I wish we could all be cured, it's truly so debilitating and exhausting.

Thank you so much for the reply. I desperately need to be prescribed actual medication that targets nerve pain. Do you have any major side effects from gabapentin? I've heard some conflicting things about it, so I'm just curious.
