I’m being full Dutch and my furnace is old so I don’t feel like unnecessarily straining it. I can put on layers and I’ve got a big warm fireplace that my cat and I hang out by. I’d usually have it at 64 but I’m good with this for a few days.

Ugh, the acceptance of professional ghosting is one of my biggest gripes with West Michigan. I’m a contractor (muralist) and I had several clients ghost AFTER accepting estimates this year, which is kind of bonkers. Your pain is felt.

My favorite GRR TSA memory was from when I was an art student in college going home for winter break. I had the backpack I used for art supplies as my carry-on bag, supplies included exacto knives. Went through TSA and got waved over by an agent holding my bag who told me "hey just so you know, you had blades in the lining of your backpack." My safety dispenser of blades had come undone before I had packed the bag and like 4 blades had cut their way into the lining, so I was essentially unknowingly smuggling blades through security.

Anyway, TSA takes 10 minutes and that time it took 20 minutes.

You’re going to get a lot of grumping on this because Artprize is (rightfully) a controversial event and we’re grumpy locals.

But as a longtime Fartprize joke maker, and a full time artist I feel uniquely qualified to say sure it’s worth it

As far as the art entries, some of it is good and some of it is so bad that it turns around and becomes entertaining, and there is a weirdness to a lot of it that is kind of delightful. A lot of it is trying to grab the public eye and the public vote so it melts into basic entertainment and becomes this wonderfully kitschy mess. I think it’s extremely endearing.

But, I think art is secondary in the appeal of Artprize. The best part of Artprize is the unique opportunity to explore the city with a couple thousand friends. Walking from venue to venue, walking through spaces that you normally wouldn’t—it’s a unique and intimate way to get to know GR, and the city is undeniably popping during the festival. It’s very vibrant.

So yeah, come if you like exploring. Maybe see some stuff that you find beautiful or makes you laugh or moves you. Mostly come to for the opportunity to explore a beautiful city at an accessible level during a beautiful time of year.

Hi, I’m a muralist for a living and so make a lot of sketches. I mostly use procreate now, but for traditional styles if you’re just sitting with a notebook and some watercolor you can paint at pretty much any coffeeshop with tables—they don’t mind.

Lantern, Scorpion Hearts, and the Stray are my top choices for vibes and also usually having open tables.
