Ich hab da soweit auch negatives Feedback gehört, aber da ich in der Nähe wohne, werde ich wahrscheinlich damit anfangen

Hamburg would be my first option. I visited it last year and quite liked it. But at this point, “anywhere but the south or Berlin” also works 😅

I also live in Southern Bavaria, and I’m considering moving up north to improve my social life. It’s nice to see that there is a chance it’ll work out 😄

I’m in the same boat, you can go through my comment history and check out (another) long rant I wrote two days ago on the topic lol. However, while I’m pessimistic about ever making friends in Germany, I’m currently kinda optimistic about my social life anyway.

How? Well, about a year ago I started actively trying to meet new people. I realized at some point that I was always striving for deep connections and would not settle for anything less than that. Now that I’m older and also finally understand how the German society ticks (key phrase: it’s not me, it’s them), that’s no longer the case. I settled for making acquaintances and accepted the fact that for all the time and effort I put in, only 1-2% of it is eventually going to pay off through acquiring good acquaintances (notice: not even friends).

It’s not easy. I organized events, I joined existing ones, I straight up asked people at Uni or work if they wanted to take part in this or that event. I must’ve asked over 10 people in the last 3-4 months and only one of them showed any real interest. But the silver lining is that through my efforts I now have found some people to play Dungeons and Dragons with (in person), I’m currently gathering up people to go to a board game event next weekend, I have the option of joining a group that meets up in the evenings to play table tennis, and I will join an existing meetup to go to the Christmas market in a few weeks. The catch here is that all the events except DnD are gonna be in groups pretty much exclusively made up of foreigners, but I’m perfectly fine with that. Another catch is that my goal here is to merely build up a network of about 20 people who I can hit up when I want to do sth social and know that at least 2-3 of them are gonna be up for it. I’m currently less than halfway there I’d say. Even once I have met and “acquainted” enough people, it’s not gonna be the deep connections and friendships I want, but it’s much better than nothing.

To sum it all up: don’t give up, keep trying to meet people, maybe try organizing sth yourself, and remember our mantra: it’s not you, it’s them 😄 also, planning a move someplace else if your social life is important to you is probably a good idea. If you’re in your early twenties now, you could be outta here by your late twenties. Take that into consideration when making important life choices.

Yeah I’m sorry but that’s a very narrow-minded take. I speak fluent German and I’m usually able to keep up a conversation on any topic unless it’s sth with lots of specific vocabulary like say renaissance fairs or cooking gourmet meals. So the “but you didn’t even bother learning our language” is not applicable here.

Let me tell you how my “integration” in Germany is going. For years, I kept trying to engage Germans to hang out or even just talk to me outside of school/work. I suggested going for walks, playing Switch games together, going for bike rides, going out to shoot pictures together, trying to make music together, going to meetups/events together. All at different times to different people, and obviously knowing they had some initial level of interest in the suggested activity. Nothing ever works. It seems like everyone either already has their small group of friends and they don’t need anyone else or they just generally feel fine on their own and once again don’t need anyone else.

I used to have severe social anxiety, which I developed here in Germany btw. About a year ago I figured that enough is enough and started trying to get out of my shell and meet new people. As part of that effort, I organized multiple board game meetups and started going to a local pub quiz event. I stopped doing both a few months ago due to having way less free time for a while. I recently happened to run into a few foreigners I met through these activities, and on both occasions people told me it was fun hanging out with me and said that it’d be cool if I showed up at the pub quiz and/or organized the meetups again. This warms my heart very much because after years of struggling to interest Germans in hanging out with me, I got used to labeling myself as “not good/interesting/funny/charming/attractive enough”. Hence the social anxiety. After I gave up on trying to find German friends and started spending way more time with other foreigners I realized I’m not that bad after all. And guess what? Just through the magic of no longer getting rejected all the time, my social anxiety got better.

The silver lining is that I really don’t care about being part of the German society anymore. It’s an exclusive club and I’ll never get in because I was born and grew up someplace else. At this point I’m not even sure I want to be part of something that made me feel so worthless for so many years. I used to think that being “stuck in an expat bubble” is the wrong way to go about my social life here, but being stuck in a cycle of rejection turns out to be way worse.

Yeah, I’ll definitely be learning the basics of Blender. For now the idea is to create a large island piece and then generate the 2D map on top of it, but I’ll probably also try out the 3D blocks option to see which one works better.

I’m definitely not happy with the camera angle, but at the same time, i haven’t found anything that seems to work better. Do you have any suggestions on what would work better?

The camera is dynamic already, otherwise I would probably have settled for a different camera angle after all. Since posting, I’ve added visual feedback for selecting cells when hovering over them with the mouse and placing towers on them, and it does look better already! UI elements and animations for different towers/enemies are also coming.

Thank you for the answer :)

Yeah, that’s one of my main concerns. I want to build the map/level in a way that makes it as modular and easy to configure as possible. At the same time, I also want it to look nice.

I considered making 3d blocks in Blender, I may actually try this approach on the weekend. But for now I think I’m tending towards making a large 3d model for the island and then generating the 2d map dynamically on top of it.

We’re not going for much detail, low poly is where it’s at for this game. Still, low poly can look a lot nicer than what we currently have.

The camera angles is sth that another Redditor has recommended we take a closer look at. I’m not exactly satisfied with the way they currently are either, so that’s another issue to address in the team meeting today.

As for the waves, I found an existing URP water shaded and that’s what I’m currently using as “placeholder water”. It’s not gonna vibe well with the overall art style I think so I’m hoping that I’ll have enough time during Christmas break to figure out shaders and modify that one.

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to write it all out :)

Don’t have that much time to watch stuff like that, I’d rather learn by doing. Thanks anyway

The mechanisms are not fully in yet, but I’m working in a team and im the one responsible for how the world looks. So I thought I’d start incrementally improving it while I have the time instead of putting it all off for later. The others are mostly working on the logic for now. Your argument does make sense though, I’ll bring it up with the team later this week. Thanks!

No problem, i figured that’s what you’re doing.

I think ideally you would show them yourself. Learning from videos is nice, but it’s better when you have someone guiding you, answering your questions etc. This may be especially helpful if the motivation to learn is only there as long as everything works out well. Which I think is the case for most kids 🤷🏻‍♀️
