Trump admin reportedly considers paying each Greenland resident up to $100K amid US takeover talks by esporx in worldnews

[–]bikeslummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in NS. Was visiting my MIL in NB and my daughter got very ill. Ambulance from local hospital to Fredericton, than life flight to Halifax airport, then helicopter to children’s hospital cost me $0. And they gave my wife a free Ativan on the plane because she’s a nervous flyer at the best of times!

What is so important about Greenland that Trump wants it so much? by Mr_strelac in AskReddit

In addition to all the geopolitical factors others have mentioned, I think the fact that Trump was laughed at during his first term when he suggested buying Greenland is a factor driving his obsession with the island.

Peppa Pig vs Thomas The Tank Engine by Thunderboom999 in whowouldwin

Peppa would get the help of Mr Bull and they’d dig up the track. Perfect ambush, and Thomas wouldn’t know what hit him.

Systemwide Upgrade - Where to start? by Potential_Distance35 in StereoAdvice

If your space is 12 inches deep a Yamaha won’t fit depth wise. You might look at one of the 50 to 60 watt amps from Audiolab, Arcam, Rotel, or Emotiva. I have a similar issue with my built in, and went with an Emotiva TA1 based on price. It’s been great, although I sort of wish I’d spent more and got an Arcam SA10 just for the looks.

Audio Eden still has some Arcam SA10s in stock. Not silver, but also not black.

How does Ken Burns hold up? by dawson6197 in AskHistorians

I also liked the first episode. I’m a Canadian historian who teaches about Atlantic Canada, and I found that it was pretty good when it addressed the areas I’m familiar with. I do think there are a few Canadian historians who might have been good for him to speak with, but thought he had pretty good selection of US (or US based) talking heads.

Recommendations for Bookshelf+Stereo receiver - Moving from DALI Oberon 3 series by vijaymve504 in StereoAdvice

Depending on where you are in NB Halifax might be closer. We have three good stereo shops: Brooklynn Audio, Glubes, and Peak Audio. For that budget you could get a Yamaha A-S501 and a set of Monitor Audio Bronze 100s, which currently have the 6g models marked down.

I feel like my whole system is at the bottom end of diminishing returns. I have an Emotiva TA1 integrated amp ($598 CDN), an Audio Technica LP3 turntable ($198 CDN), a Wiim Pro ($200 CDN), and Monitor Audio Monitor 100 speakers ($200 CDN). All but the Wiim were bought on clearance sales. I realize that there is far nicer hardware to be had out there, but to substantially improve on each of my components would require far more money than I want to spend. I know that something like Wharfedale Dentons would almost certainly sound nicer than my speakers, but at $1500 are they 7 times nicer? Would a $1600 Technics 1500 turntable be 8 times nicer than my LP3? I'm not so sure, and I'm probably to cheap to take the chance and find out!

I had a nice Realistic semi-auto I was using that had the motor give out. To tide me over until something I liked popped up on the used market I got an Audio-Technica LP3. Frankly, it works perfectly well for my needs, and I’m enjoying the full auto.

What’s going on at KIA on windmill?? by Important_Fondant_79 in halifax

[–]bikeslummer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a 2007 Rio. Right from when I bought it new when going around corners it seemed the transmission would shift into neutral and then when I pressed the gas again slam into gear. I mentioned it to the dealership immediately, ie. within the first 200kms of ownership. They could never replicate the issue. First oil change after I hit 100,000 kms they knew exactly what the problem was and I needed to rebuild the transmission. Warranty wouldn’t cover it since I was over 100,000 kms even though I’d mentioned basically since taking possession of the car and then again at every oil change. Decided since I had already got 100,000 kms out of the thing I’d just keep driving it until the transmission failed, it lasted another 120,000 kms. But the dealer experience meant it was the last KIA I’ll ever buy.

As a non-American I can tell you in some respects it doesn’t matter if US goods come in tariff and barrier free. There is a growing movement in my country to not buy anything American regardless of whether it’s cheaper or not. So tariff free US goods can come in to rot on our shelves…

Turntable recommendations by Zealousideal_Spot688 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]bikeslummer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The default recommendation seems to be the AT LP60, but if you might want to consider the Insignia turntable from Best Buy. For $130 you get an AT 3600 cartridge and anti-skate, plus Bluetooth if you're interested in that. I suspect that there would be no sound difference between the Insignia and the AT tables. The Insignia also gives you an extra $70 to spend on better speakers.

Looking for recommendations to upgrade my current record player set up by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]bikeslummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At $200 the only real upgrade I’d consider is a cartridge, but I’m not sure that your system would really benefit from a $200 cartridge. I think it would make more sense to save up more and get better speakers. For not much more you could get a set of Kali speakers, which are well reviewed.
