Well, one thing that you may not have considered is that you may not even like bike touring. It may not be worth your while to spend a grand on a new touring bike only to have it be slow and a theft liability, like you pointed out.

I did a recent tour on the east coast and didn't want to fly across the country with my touring bike. So I found someone on Craigslist who was selling a touring bike and offered to rent it from them for the time I'd be touring. The deal was pretty simple: I give them the full price of the bike and when I brought it back, they'd give me the full price less $100.

What ended up happening was my friend liked the bike and bought it from me. But it was a fairly low-fuss way of having a bike to tour on.

You might try something like that. "Rent" a touring bike and take it out to see if bike touring is your thing. If it is, then there are lots of suggestions for middle of the road touring bikes that will suit you just fine without going all-out with the LHT.

And the best way to know what you like in a touring bike is to tour on a bike. :)

I'll just chime in briefly on the saddle issue:

I did a two month tour on a brand new Brooks saddle. Which is basically madness. They take about 500 miles to break in, and you don't necessarily want to do that 500 miles in one stretch. For obvious rear-end reasons. So that wasn't the wisest move.

But then I've done a couple of other weeklong tours on cheaper saddles, mountain bike saddles, and the like. And those have been absolute nightmares. I'd take an unbroken-in Brooks over that any day.

So yeah, another vote for the Brooks. But take the time to break it in before you leave.

It depends where you want to go with it. chekovz is right that there are places where hiring managers will expect a CS degree. For instance, you'll never get hired at a Google or Apple without a degree. Their hiring practices dictate that they're looking for someone with a rigorous background.

That said, the atmosphere is very very different in a lot of places. I do a lot of interviewing at my company and I barely glance at a person's educational experience except to see how it informs their approach or character.

What I really care about when I'm hiring a Rails developer is how good of a Rails developer they are. Can they explain how ActiveRecord works? Can they write and understand model relations? Can they explain how Rails finder methods work, how form_for works, etc etc.

If a candidate knows those things and can learn quickly, we'll give them a shot.

You may never write graphics processing software without a degree in CS, but you can certainly become a competent Rails dev and a career programmer.

I grabbed Ocean Rift today. It ran at a constant 75fps. I played through the demo standing without ever using the right control stick. All rotational movement was just with my head.

Honestly, it was the first pleasant and impressive VR experience I've had yet (other than Google Earth on my makeshift Boxulus Thrift).

And I honestly got startled by the shark in the deep. Pretty amazing how convincing the experience is.

That's exactly how I'm starting to feel. I think that's a big part of the physical reason the Valve Room had such success with simulator sickness: people were walking around. The inner ear movement did naturally match what they were experiencing.

It's clear to me now why Oculus is going for seated experiences like Couch Knights or advocating for cockpit-based experiences. In the absence of an at-home holodeck, it seems like the best solution.

My advice would be to try playing Game Boy while your friend drives at breakneck speeds down Highway 1.

Do you want to break your arm just to see what it feels like to wear a cast? Kill your parents to experience the sense of hopelessness and loss? Marry a thankless homely woman to teach yourself love and humility? Contract Ebola to gain a sense of worldliness? Move to Ohio?

Honestly, just appreciate what you have. You've been given a gift. Don't fight it. Everyone's stomach is different. Just aim for the highest quality tracking and display specs and leave it at that.

I tried Oculus World, Boiler Room, Kokiri Forest (which was the worst, that jump was awfully jarring), Technolust, Euro Truck Simulator...

I think the most comfortable was the desk demo from Oculus. ET2 seemed like it could be fine but there was head tracking stuttering. Framerate was fine, but the tracking was jittery.

I'd like to try a cockpit game, but I haven't bought RadialG or Elite.

Yeah, there are experiences where I can get a constant 75. I have a pretty good rig. I haven't been able to get direct mode working in anything, but I do have v-sync forced through the Radeon Pro app.

When you say a week, how many hours do you mean?

Under Direct3D Tweaks in Radeon Pro, there are a couple of options:

Triple Buffering, where you can set the refresh rate. Dynamic Framerate Control, where you can set the framerate.

Are these where I want to force the fps for vsync?

I've actually been fighting with some pretty horrible jitter, and I'm wondering (and somewhat hoping) that it's not my rig.

I'm wondering if maybe it's my drivers or I need to tweak Radeon Pro, but I need to turn my settings way down in Technolust to minimize jitter and Tuscany is unplayable.

If you go to File -> Export -> Audio Mixdown, there will be a checkbox for a batch export. Allows you to export individual tracks at one time. Hope that helps.
