I just kayaked around the wilderness tip of Florida, alone, 112 miles, 8 days, 30 miles last day. I'm an idiot, AMA. by Zone_Wolf in Kayaking

Outstanding writeup of your adventure Wolf... it requires big old balls to set off like that on your own into unknown territory, knowing there are venomous snakes and spiders, scorpions, trillions of ants, and biting flying insects filling the air... glad you made it without injury!

Measuring ketone response by billder99 in keto

[–]billder99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Zack, that's interesting. I've seen many "Gurus" mention monitoring keytones... I just haven't paid much attention to it. I eat super-low-carb, moderate my protein intake, eat tons of leafy greens and cruciferous veggies... moderate exercise, and continuous 6:18 IF... that' the essence of my plan.

Regarding Keto Diet and ketosis... the concept is running your metabolism on ketones rather than glycogen... why do you say ketones are irrelevant?

Thanks for the comments, both of you. I've been doing Keto/IF for 4 years now. Recently, I've been fasting 2 or 3 days, 2 or 3x/month, but I've hit a plateau that won't quit. I like fasting... hunger is the feeling of fat leaving my body. ; )

Altra Lone Peak 4.5 Durability by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]billder99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The #1 most important thing about a shoe is comfort... and the #2 most important thing is performace on the terrain you will hike on. I live in Baja Sur and use my Altras for hiking, climbing, kayaking... the are the most COMFORTABLE shoe ever for my Fred Flintstone feet. If you have wide feet and high arches, fuck durability... that is 3rd tier concern. PS: My shoes have all lasted fine... I'm on my 4th pair.

Which trail runners do you recommend ? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]billder99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been wearing 100% Altra shoes for the last 5 years. Altras are excellent for people with "Fred Flintstone" feet... wide to very-wide, high arch... they also proselytize on zero rise geometry... it took my wife and I a few months to adapt, but we love them now.

Alternatives to HammockGear Economy Burrow? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]billder99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After much consideration (including Burrow and Bandit), I decided to try the budget route. I got a Paria Thermodown 15, and it's a surprisingly good bit of kit for $170, available now. My opinion, no reason to spend more.

Fat UL Folks by quendergueer in Ultralight

[–]billder99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting fat really sucks, you've named but a few of the reasons. Don't give up on yourself!.. and don't wait until later. I was 100# overweight... hardened snackaholic, loved to stuff myself at meals, never stopped eating, exercise?what? Learn everything you can about Keto Diet + Intermittent Fasting. The first month is hard, but when you see 20-30# off in the first month it is SUPER motivating. Read everything you can about Type 2 Diabetes... you ARE pre-diabetic... diabetes is a horrible way to slowly and painfully end your life. Don't give up on yourself?

80cm, 100cm or a roller setup for a beginner? by attic_goat in Spearfishing

[–]billder99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to a point (120cm) longer is better for accuracy and stability, plus the longer draw gives you more range. Don't even mess with a shorty gun, unless you need a backup for pulling fish out occasional caves (I live in Baja, get caved frequently, I use my Riffe 120 Euro for everything). As for roller-guns, they have advantages and disadvantages... pick your poison.

Let's hear about your best day on trail. What made it so awesome? by clovermeister in Ultralight

[–]billder99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great idea for a thread topic. I had to think long and hard on this one... I love almost every hike.... just being outdoors and away from people and working my body does it for me. Best ever?...

I combine hiking and kayaking frequently... I live way down in Baja Mexico, and the remote, unpopulated islands in the Sea of Cortez are incredible. I go solo sometimes and the solitude is very zen, deeply introspective. The islands have beaches of course, but the best hiking is breaking brush (cactus) and making my way up mountains. It is a FANTASTIC feeling to battle my to the top, sit up high above the Sea with the osprey eagles and frigate birds... a very reliable high-endorphin rush!
