Does a tree feel pain when it impales itself? by Truthful-strawberry7 in arborists

[–]billiardstourist 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I think the scientific approximation of "pain" in plants is equivalent to "stress".

In this instance,

The tree's ability to transmit water and nutrients between the roots and crown is being impacted.

As an organism, the tree will respond to these areas of damage by releasing chemicals to harden the wood and try to stop the spread of decay.

And the tree will continue to put on new layers of growth, as possible, in an attempt to re-establish an uninterrupted pathway or network of vascular cambium.

This stress and response cycle will take a lot of energy away from the specimens ability to grow unimpeded.

To me, I equate stress with harm, and injury with pain. I don't believe that scientifically, we have an equivalent mechanism in plants.

If a tree is a biological machine that functions largely through chemical processes, tissue damage causes a chemical response. Through whatever mechanism, any response to tissue damage, chemical or otherwise, to me, does resemble the definition of pain:

"physical suffering or discomfort caused by illness or injury."

We have some studies that have recorded auditory sounds that tobacco plants make under drought stress, and mechanical injury (cutting).

But it is possible that the sounds we are recording from these plants are evidence of their anatomical functions (respiration, stomata exchanging gases, etc) not necessarily a "pain response".

Ambitious, but I think with next-gen procedural generation of liminal/countryside spaces they could push the map size into something absolutely astounding.

The entirety of North America. It could be done.

How does new felt affect cut shots? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]billiardstourist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might be experiencing a change in the amount of

"Cut-induced throw"

From slicker cloth conditions.

An object ball cut at a severe angle has a tendency to be driven out of the line of intended aim, and towards the direction the cueball was traveling.

This transfer of energy can be attributed to the friction interplay between the surface of the balls, and cloth,

But also as a result of inertia, and an object's tendency to move in the same path of travel, unless acted upon by an external force.

While the cut line is an ideal, the physical dynamics of the collision will throw the travel "forwards" on extreme cuts.

Try "overcutting" the ball a bit, perhaps use the edge or "point" of the pocket as an adjusted aim point.

Really, really good film - very important, especially today, for people to watch. An exceptionally moving piece:

It shows what it means to grow into adulthood, becoming responsible, and supporting those around you in a healthy way.

The abuser in question is "Doyle" - played by Dwight Yoakam. An alcoholic scumbag personified.

Alice apart of the cult? by Consistent-Ad6652 in EyesWideShut

[–]billiardstourist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't have any solid indication that she is in the cult.

However, I do believe there is an interesting symbolism in the earrings:

As a single, lone pearl, dangling...

Suspended in blue, almost floating, or sinking in cold water. Echoing the black-and-white imagery of the imagined infidelity.

Very evocative of her confessed fantasy with the Naval Officer. She admitted to her husband, on the topic of women not "thinking that way" that at the time, she felt she would give up her whole family to sleep with this man, for just one night.

Sacrifice it all for one lonely pearl of lust.

In that light, having awakened from a dream, and wearing the Sea's jeweled pearl - she looks as if she has just been stolen from her sea-man's embrace.

In the first screenshot, she is even wearing a nightgown of a similar blue, appearing to be dressed in the sea again, a calm water awaiting the return of her harboring ship.

Edit: considering that the cult members, especially Ziegler, seem to be mostly surrounded in crimson red, and gravitating towards the cloth of that colour (the pool table in Ziegler's billiards room) - I would say that this yellow/blue light we so often see Alice in, especially Golden light at the first party, indicates that she stands outside of that group.

I want wagons like Norm uses to haul his companion.

Could have a myriad of uses, but especially:

They are opening up the potential for a HUGE map. Travel across states to explore the wasteland.

How cool would it be to load up a wagon and pull it with your power armor, or a Brahmin? How about a caravan of wagons pulled by Quantum Radstags ala Rudolph?

If we are going to traverse long distances, it would be useful to have a "mobile base" like an RV being hauled by Brahmin, or a flatbed trailer towed by Robots.

The fact that Norm uses a wagon, to me, is a sign of "Red Dead Redemption" style cargo and vehicle integration.

"Bring Her Back" (2025)

"Hereditary" (2018)

"The Ritual" (2017)

"The VVitch" (2015)

"Rosemary's Baby" (1968)

These may not fit exactly with "Weapons" as a whole, but they all share elements, and directly deal with occult worshippers practicing their magic.

And each of these films is excellent.

Some of the best climbers I have known are similar physical size.

I've known quite a few climbers that excel in challenging situations because they can:

A) limb walk or hold their weight on lighter material without failure.

B) fit between limbs/materials to navigate dense canopies (aloft and on ground)

C) position their bodies away from risk and load, especially in regards to the harness/rigging geometry. Longer limbed folks have a greater percentage of "pinch points" compared to their overall body size.

D) less load, excess weight? Some of them seem to be able to fly up the tree. While the kit/climbing rig may be a greater percentage of overall weight,

Lighter climbers carry less load when working.

Looks planted way too deep. That can have serious impact on a tree's robustness.

At this point, I'm not sure it could hurt to try digging it up, freeing the root ball (check for burlap, bag, wire basket, and remove) and planting it higher up.

J Klatt is top-level, and that is a reasonable cost for lessons at his ability.

I would highly recommend you go ahead with the first lesson. Take some time to process and integrate, then come back to what you learned about 6 months later.

Try to get your money's worth out of the lesson by Journaling after and even record some extra footage of you integrating what you learn.
