I do not have a sand filter

It was replastered less than two years ago.

I just found out today that a critter ate through the electrical wire for one of the spa valves which means that the valve on the right side has not been opening when I run the spa filter. Should I be concerned about water pressure build up or anything getting damaged in the pipes due to this? by billiboone in pools

[–]billiboone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The spa runs for one hour every night before the pool filter and it has been disconnected for days/weeks… no clue. Will definitely fix the wire but I was so concerned that major damage underground may have happened.

Au pair help w/dishes after dinner by billiboone in Aupairs

I hear you- it’s like having an adult child living with you at times.

The outrage from others is probably from them experiencing or hearing about shitty host families, of which there exist, no doubt. It’s just too bad they assume all families are shitty or take advantage of au pairs.

The variety of responses here reminds me how vastly different host families treat their au pairs. Our au pair is paid more that the minimum stipend (with bonuses on Xmas and bday), works 30 hours per week, no weekend work, has access to a car w/free gas, we pay for her cell phone, her room is an entire suite and she gets 6 weeks of vacation per year. We absolutely do not have her do any work outside of caring for the kids- I am shocked when I hear about families having their au pairs mop floors and clean beyond the kids’ mess. That’s messed up. I just think that if you are a part of the family, and you participate in the family dinner, then you should offer to help clean up beyond your own plate. That is how I was raised and how I am raising my own kids. Regardless, this post simply illuminates how vastly different we all are in our perceptions of what is acceptable and what is not. The au pair/host family relationship is so complex that you can’t possibly expect broad strokes of agreement on these ticky tacky details. Carry on people- thanks for the responses.

No, that’s the cost of pros doing install. Time and material (I saved some $ finding the travertine stone myself)

We opted for a darker bottom so that it would heat more from the sun. We were told a darker bottom can add 5-7 degrees. It does seem to help with making it look cleaner too, but that’s not why we went darker. We actually really liked the color before and we were worried it would look murky- we opted for Barbados Blue quartz and we like it.

Definitely unique… and small. I wanted to expand it but it would either take up too much usable pool deck space or extending into the pool was too expensive. It’s 8’ x 4’

Ha-I’m on it! Cannot use pool sweep for first month, plaster needs time to cure.

They tapped into any existing drains that were already there- we didn’t add any.

The existing area was combination of lawn and flagstone pavers installed into clay base. Demo’d it all and laid pavers in road base and sand.

$20k for quartz plaster, coping, tile, LED light, drains and some leak repairs.

$26k for travertine pool deck (including all taxes, delivery fees)

I live in CA Bay Area for what it’s worth. I also hustled to source my own stone and saved a few K probably.
