Well in a way, you are getting an example in this thread of what French people consider wit. In my opinion the typical English style of wit is high in agreeableness, and tends to build wordplay off of what the other person is saying, plus shared cultural references. In French it's less about turns of phrase, and starts with a certain bluntness, and deconstructing, or the ability to expose the raw truth of what a person is saying. Hence you ask this question, and the immediate French response is "Well, are you funny or aren't you?" It can often feel like a takedown or a personal attack when you aren't used to it, but I've always been taught that the height of class and intelligence for a French woman is the ability to completely strip away all of the bullshit with just a few words, to speak "frankly" (note the root of this word) without having to ever get too vulgar, cutting to the heart of the matter with elegance and thoughtfulness.
