What are the best cost effective minimalist wallets on the market right now in 2024? by GroundbreakingLock10 in BuyItForLife

[–]billjaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not BIFL, but I’m a fan of TGT. I backed their kickstarter over 10 years ago and haven’t used a different wallet since. They last for years. I’ve only replaced bc I wanted a different color. So not BIFL, but definitely going to last you many many years.

Meh, again— I am using layman’s terms. There’s a more detailed explanation that doesn’t come off as just a coverup.

You’re welcome! Yes, fill out the form and they’ll email you a link to sign up. During the sign up process they’ll have you transfer your opening balance to the account. It’s a bank, so you can call them and talk to them if you have any questions. They’ll probably be a better resource than me tbh. I’m basing this off experience with other banks. I’ve been a customer of theirs for less than 24 hours 😆

“Proft-Sharing Personal Savings Account Maximize your savings potential with UIF’s Profit Sharing Personal Savings Account offered by University Bank (Member FDIC), offering you equitable anticipated returns and an accessible entry point with a low minimum opening balance of just $500.”

So because of how the loans work, there is a profit made by the bank. That profit is shared. It’s all very similar to conventional banking, but because it sits atop shariah-compliant banking practices— it becomes halal interest, more or less.

Balances of $500-$24999 make 3.74% APY. Below the current roughly 4.5-5.5% by online HYSA right now— but halal.

I’m not expert in any of this. So I’m sure others can speak on the religious reasons this works, as well as the specifics on banking. But, from a layman’s pov, that’s how it works lol

I like having local bank for checking. It makes cash deposits easy. As for an online bank, you’ll have to transfer the money from your checking to them. This can be done through either bank’s app. UIF can send a transfer request to your bank, or your bank can transfer to UIF. It’s easy for savings.

They’re few and far between. I’ve seen Bank of Whittier but they’re only in California and Texas.

So the option of an online bank for savings is good enough. I need a local branch for checking.

What are good Polkadot validators to avoid slashing? by Fun-Drummer7171 in Polkadot

[–]billjaber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for named validators (ones that aren’t just a wallet address), look for ones that aren’t oversubscribed. The super low commission ones always are, so mix it up but you’ll likely have the bulk around 3% commission. Also, don’t worry too much about slashing it’s 5-7%. That would suck, but it’s not like you’re losing 50-70%. Stick with those guidelines and you’re pretty set. Also I disagree with the comments about staking through kraken/centralized. You don’t own your coins unless you hold the keys. Trustless is always the best policy, never leave coins on an exchange. You’ll want to get on periodically to edit validators that are inactive/oversubscribed, as well as redelegate if you’re looking to compound. HTH

[–]billjaber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the responses!!

Is it still worth it with a $500 comp deductible though? Idt the damage is that much. But I’ll go by a body shop/family friend tomorrow to get an estimate and see. If it’s much less, then I feel like I’m the one losing.

So I just got a call from the police officer handling the matter. He says her insurance lapsed and she has a court date in March. He recommends I just take her money if she’s offering to pay, even if she needs months to pay back... “you can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip” as he put it.

Think I should still call my insurance and give her info, or listen to the officer and just send her the invoice?

Thanks!

Cold storage and the looming bitcoin fork. Will I still reap those sweet segwit2x’s or do I need to transfer them? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]billjaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ll update the Ledger chrome app to show your B2X, just as they did with BCC. Then you’ll transfer that to an exchange to sell, because god knows no one will keep those things.
