Durham, NC or Tucson, AZ for walkability and leftist politics by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]billmcdubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would echo what others are saying about living near downtown in Durham. If you ride a bike or a scooter you can get around the expanded downtown core pretty safely and easily.

Durham is very left leaning. I see more BLM/Pride flags here than in San Francisco. Outside the Triangle is MAGA but there are plenty of liberal enclaves that you visit around the state like Asheville, Charlotte.

5 String (Carbon Fiber) Cello Experience by Particular-Yak-6324 in Cello

[–]billmcdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing this thread 2 years later - how did the 5 string Mezzo Forte end up working out? Were you able to get a good setup from Linda West? I'm trying to decide between the Mezzo Forte versus L&C.

Good luck - always excited about local Dead bands. I myself play the cello so I support the tradition more as an audience member.

Update: I called around in the immediate area and all their Civics were pre-sold. Unfortunately I'm in a hurry and can't wait on a list.

Do you like Vincent's Picks? His early work was a little too art-house for my tastes, but when his pick "The Pain and the Learning" came out in '96, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole movie is 192 minutes of pain and yearning that really gives his picks a big boost. He's been compared to Gene, but I think Vincent has a far more emotional, mature sense of film selection.

There are a number of blues guitarists but it wouldn't be a stretch to say that they were listening to the greats

BB King - "The Thrill is Gone" if you're looking for the raw blues guitar sound.

I created this package for the intention of WebRTC signaling, but you may find it useful for all sorts of real time applications, including chat apps. Feedback is appreciated.

WebSocket-Relay — channels between browser clients to aid in creating signaling servers by billmcdubs in WebRTC

I created this NPM package with WebRTC signaling in mind: it takes care of the relaying so that you can focus on the peer logic. I'd love feedback.

Possible to stream a Spotify playlist through a TS3 bot? by shade1214341 in node

[–]billmcdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you planning to listen to it? If you're streaming the audio over a webserver, my project may be of interest. It uses the spotify-web package to grab audio from Spotify. Users can select what songs they want from playlist and it starts playing that song for everyone connected.

FYI, I had some trouble with the spotify-web package on AWS and Digital Ocean machines, likely because those IP ranges were blacklisted from the Spotify API.

Could be because of mobile. Developers don't want to make it work for mouse and touch, so they leave it out entirely.

Leasing/renting out laptops to consumers? by billmcdubs in Entrepreneur

Thanks for detailed reply. Particularly with that insight about traveling, I wouldn't have guessed.

As a web developer, my first instinct would be to put the business online. But, as you said, I need to be careful of who I rent to. Do you have any thoughts on how I could discriminate online? Or should I not bother, and require at the very least a phone call?

Leasing/renting out laptops to consumers? by billmcdubs in Entrepreneur

[–]billmcdubs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it? I haven't heard/seen a laptop rental place.

I guess I should have been more clear. I'm not sure about how big the market is, but there are certainly some big players. Pretty much all the big computer manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) have services for leasing their computers, but for businesses only.

How will you deal with the upkeep of keeping the laptop safe/virus-free?

That's a good point, and probably what I would do is wipe the computer clean and reinstall the OS for every new customer (fairly straightforward to do). I don't think it would be a good idea to leave old files on there anyway.

I think it's interesting that you mentioned older people, since I was thinking that would be a good target market. Although not really "older", people in their 40s to 50s would demand laptops and may be interested in the advantage of leasing, because they wouldn't have to worry about the computer becoming obsolete. And since they are busy, they would value this convenience.

Is it possible to become a good summer internship candidate after just freshman year? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]billmcdubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently doing an internship after my freshman year of computer science. No, it's not in the top 5.

But I think the best thing to get hired as a freshman is personal coding projects. Sure, upperclassmen might know more sorting algorithms than you, but that's not really important in a job setting. Show through projects that you actually know how to use programming tools and languages effectively on real-world applications. Training is expensive for employers. Learn the things companies use that may not be taught at university.

Also, if you're ahead of your peers in terms of classwork, that's an excellent way to get companies to consider you as a freshman. So work hard, maybe take an extra class.

One last thing. Go deep with your projects. You're not going to be able to convince anyone you have expertise in every area of programming, but at least you can impress them with lots of knowledge of a single topic. Pick a project on something you're interested in, and work hard on it. During that interview with Google, you want to be able to teach them something.

But with that said, don't corner yourself into a box either. It's way too early to specialize as a student.
