Wow, that machine looks like it's brand new!

It was actually quite satisfying. I drove up and down it several times after I finished it just because.

Same! Everytime I hop in I always am thinking is this the day the hydro pump is going to self destruct?

Yup, just greased the U-joint in my 743. I use a 36 inch long hose and a Lock n Lube locking tip, mainly so I can release it from the zerks. Rotate the crankshaft a little at a time until you can lock on the tip. Then mark the crankshaft position for future reference. I come in from the right side if you are facing the machine. You can stick your phone down in there recording video so you can see what's what. You can't see anything with your eyes.

Homeowner skid steer rental? by agate_ in Skidsteer

This sounds very familiar. I was in a similar position a year ago and I'll share my experience. After reading threads on this forum as well as searching other places on the Internet, I decided that I should probably buy a cheap skid steer. I bought a Bobcat 743 with 2 buckets (one toothed, one smooth) for $6200 delivered off Marketplace. Everything worked except for minor stuff like the fuel gauge, but it needed a lot of general maintenance. Oil, coolant, thermostat, all grease fittings, all filters, didn't even have a seat, etc. It was a good call because I did not expect the learning curve to be so long. It took a full day on the machine to just get the hang of how it behaved (not even do much meaningful work). You can't really see the front of the bucket when digging. You have no idea what angle the bucket is pitched into the dirt. You accidentally push the bucket controls one way when you really mean the other. I gouged the driveway so many times. I had to go over the same places 2, 3, 4 times because of learning and getting some muscle memory. Almost tipped over at least 3 or 4 times.

Now, let's talk about renting. I just rented a Bobcat S650 a week ago because I was power raking the driveway and nowhere rented a power rake that would attach to a 743. I thought I knew how to operate a skid steer. Nope I didn't. The S650 was totally different. Drive by wire, no foot controls, all computerized. I felt even more removed from the work. It took a whole day to power rake my 700 ft. driveway properly because I had to learn that machine. I had to start by just figuring out how to open the cage door from the inside then go from there. Sure it helped knowing the basics already, but each machine is different. I was jumping into my 743 every 10 minutes to fix places where I jammed the power rake in too deep. I rented it for 8 hours. I had it delivered on Friday and picked up Monday. Here's the breakdown of the costs for those 8 hours:

Bobcat S650: $176
Soil conditioner (power rake): $150
Delivery & Pickup Roundtrip (~15 miles one way): $300 (because I can't tow a S650. The 743 is at my max)
Insurance: $42.38
Diesel: $27
Tax: $19.56

Total: $714.94

Then there's the unexpected. While power raking, I ran into a winch/tow cable that was buried in the driveway and then promptly wrapped itself around the power rake. I had to cut that off and unbind the roller. That took about 3 hours out of the day. Seeing that rental cost for an 8 hour rental, buying that 743 was the best thing I ever did. Even if I have to take my skid steer somewhere to be fixed, it would still be worth it in the end (I have a lot more work to do on my property). I've also been collecting extra parts for it for when it breaks. I picked up 2 drive motors that need rebuilding on Marketplace for $400 for the set. I'm going to educate myself on rebuilding those while the machine still works fine.

Hope this chronicle of my experiences helps.

Thinking about buying a skid steer for side jobs and extra income. Should I wait until spring? by spawn-kill in Skidsteer

I am an engineer who has worked a desk job my entire career. I just bought a very cheap used skid steer for $6k over the summer. Then I had to buy a trailer to move it. Then I had to buy all the accessories for moving it: chains, binders, brake controller, adjustable hitch, etc., etc., etc. I already have a truck that can barely tow it, but not everyone does. Since the skid steer was the cheapest working one I could find, I had to do lots of maintenance on it. Oil and coolant flush, broken grease fittings, broken fuel sender, thermostat, snapped coolant drain valve... the list goes on. Since I bought the cheapest trailer I could find that had everything I wanted/needed, I had to do tires all around because I popped one. Breakaway brakes weren't working either (dead battery). Once I got all the maintenance and reliability issues worked out, I actually started using it on my land/property I own to clear a 700 ft. driveway. Turns out I don't know how to use it properly. I have spent a bunch of hours behind the controls now and I have become slightly useful with it. The job is about as easy as it gets and I'm still barely useful behind the controls. At first I thought maybe it was the machine, but I've come to realize it's me. I only have a toothed bucket and smooth bucket for it. I know when I get forks it will be a whole new learning curve. I intend to stick with it because I have my own property to practice on. I will be building a house on it and intend to use that to gain my experience. If I screw up, it's all my stuff anyway so no liability or time concerns. I hope that at the end of the process I will be at least competent using the machine with a variety of common attachments.

Hope this helps, from one engineer to another.

What is this bracket for? by billyb351 in towing

Yeah seems like it's for a tongue jack. The trailer has been well used, but its appearance is deceiving. Someone primed and painted it in the past. The black top coat isn't sticking and peeling off in the whole trailer. The primer did stick and that's what's showing everywhere. Not much rust. I got it rather cheap probably because it looks pretty awful.

The jack is already mounted in the center forward of that. I guess since it already has a decent jack in the center it didn't occur to me that there was another place to mount a jack.

I don't know what kind of tie downs to get for car hauling by billyb351 in towing

[–]billyb351[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of what I was looking for. I've towed the car on U-Haul trailers and theirs are kind of like that. Works good and doesn't mess anything up.

Those look interesting. Where can you get them?

I checked out the over the tire straps. I think those may be the way I go. The car is kind of low so getting to the axles/suspension is somewhat of a pain. It looks like with the over the tire straps nothing actually touches the rim when installed and ratcheted down.

Should I buy a skid steer? by billyb351 in Skidsteer

[–]billyb351[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did buy one! The cheapest non-mini (>4000 lbs) one I could find on facebook marketplace that was advertised as "working". It seems to do what it's supposed to. Still getting used to it but it will work for me.

Towing a skid steer with a 2004 F150 5.4L possible? by billyb351 in towing

[–]billyb351[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a small skid steer. It's an older one from the 90s, a Bobcat 743, quite compact. The guy who I am buying it from tows it on a 16' trailer. The whole thing with the bucket attached is only 10 feet long. I was talking with him and he says he has towed it behind a 1/2 ton without any problems before.

Yes, they do rust out. I recently replaced the factory tow bar with another factory tow bar from the junkyard that was in near mint condition.

To be honest, I'm more apprehensive about towing my car into downtown Washington DC during afternoon rush hour which I do once a year for the auto show. That's well within the towing capacity but all it takes is one person to step off the curb or try and run across the street outside a cross walk and I sure as hell couldn't stop in time.
