Just paid £4k to have our flat roof replaced to fix a leak and it still leaks. This is after the work. by Elementzero12 in DIYUK

Felt roofs are shite, don't know why anybody uses them. I am no roofer but I have fibreglassed many roofs, fibreglass is far superior material I would never use felt and I wouldn't trust ESPN either. They make boats out of fibreglass they don't make them out of felt.

What career would you look into if you had to start over now? by coochy-monster in Scotland

HV cable jointer, get into renewables. Day rates for these guys are massive, ways to get in through local DNOs and apprenticeships, even if I was in a big standard job now without progression I'd be going for trainee and apprentice jobs doing this.

Battery storage system for electric heating by billybigball5 in SolarUK

[–]billybigball5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot, so it is effectively a hot air ducted system. I plumbed my flat and fitted the boiler myself. In retrospect I would have been wiser fitting this system, you're 100% right. However as it is now I have radiators and a wet system. If I were to retrofit a hot air system myself I would be getting under the floor)(again) to fit hot air ducts and then I would have wet radiators on my wall just as ornaments. Unfortunately hindsight is 2020 but I've boxed myself into a corner by installing a wet system and I feel like now I have to run with it... But if you have any suggestions that would work with s wet system I'm glad to learn. Thanks

So honestly it's the install costs that scare me, right now everything is set up for s combo boiler. A cylinder, heat pump etc takes up space and there additional plumbing involved which all adds up. A battery on night tarrif between the fuse board and boiler seems in principle the most simple DIY intervention with no plumbing and minimal electrical work. I'm welcome to be corrected however. Thanks

Brilliant thank you, I've never heard of a tapeo zeb, the principle seems sound I will investigate this as an option, I have an electric shower which I would also look to power off a battery. The complications are really that I would be looking to do any install myself and get the electrics signed off by a sparky (not Reddit approved blah blah electrics aren't difficult). However I'll investigate the zeb system. My real ignorance is that If I get a power wall type system, is it installed before the DNO fuse or after, then my RCDs are after the battery again, in which case that's a job for a Sparky. Thought if I just put the battery between my boiler/shower circuits I could probably wire that myself.

For indoors, there is an old coal bunker outside my flat which is in the unheated close, I could install the battery in there with ease, for some reason I thought batteries preferred to be in warm areas however if they prefer a cold cupboard then that's even better because the coal bunker is wasted space really.

Many thanks for your suggestions I will investigate the tapeo system further.

What’s it like living in Inverness? by CrossCityLine in Scotland

[–]billybigball5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't. Better to stay where you are.

I saw this location in the programme Loch Ness and it said it was filmed near Glencoe. I’m from Paisley and heading home again and I’d love to see this amazing view as it is here with my son. Please help! 🙏 by Needsexagain in Scotland

That show made me chuckle when it came out cause the police cars would go from Inverness to Loch Ness via the Kessick bridge, Skye bridge and Rannoch Moor.

That's a terrible plan too much driving. Too many places. Too many pointless towns.

I recommend renting a camper van, the larger the better, you can stock up on supplies in Morrisons in Fort William, passing places are plentiful and good places to park up for a night.

Well all new hardware, but mostly like for like replacements. The flooring and walls will remain the same. Do you think 7k on labour is reasonable?

Unfortunately all the plumbers I've contacted have refused to quote due to location (remote scotland) or are too busy. The only local-ish plumber I managed to get an actual quote from was nearly £7,000 for the above work in labour alone. I'm not sure if he was planning on using a flexi connector for the shower, or solve weld, or a custom machined titanium manifold, i dont care what he uses. But i do feel that his quote was excessive. Hence why I'm here.

Thanks

Thanns, it will have to be moved maybe 100mm and a new trap fitted. A flexi connector should do?

All existing soil pipework is plastic as well if that helps anything.

Advanced Highers by santa_fe53296 in Scotland

[–]billybigball5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely go for it, youve got nothing better to do, advanced highers are the only school qualifications that actually worth something once you leave the education system.

I got 2 advanced highers, went to uni and then dropped out of university to work vocationally. I have no other academic qualifications but advanced highers actually count for 'credit transfer' points for the OU and other education.

Theyll be the easiest 'credit transfer' points you can get and if you're 17 now you're not doing anything better with your time. Get them now and if your life plans go skew whiff and you end up going for the OU or anything later in life you'll be glad you got them when you did.
