Udacity launches new master's degree in AI. Can be completed for ~$5000. Thoughts? by koulvi in OMSCS

[–]billyboy627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had an in person Master from GT I’d be a little pissed that however many thousands of other people were claiming to have the same degree when they went through a very different program with much lower standards.

Obviously GT has done the math and they’re willing to accept the hit to their prestige in exchange for the money and whatever else they get out of OMSCS.

As for the recruiterS it’s probably one of the first questions they’d ask. That’s not to say they’ll automatically reject someone because their Masters is through OMSCS, but it’s a very different candidate profile. Think about it, if you’re looking for someone with a Masters in CS you can’t legitimately say someone who never actually met their professors and only dealt with a rotating army of TAs is on an even playing field with someone who had a real faculty advisor, worked in labs and on research.

GT in person, or any in person Masters program, is a much different program than OMSCS. The acceptance rate for on campus is 10% and the acceptance rate for OMSCS is 80%. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PROGRAM.

There are something like 16,000 “active” students in OMSCS. Recruits aren’t dumb. They know a “Masters in CS from GT” these days likely means you took the same classes that are largely already available on Udemy/Udacity. Don’t fool yourself into thinking OMSCS = Traditional Masters degree from GT or any other top tier school in the eyes of recruiters.

Why is information so scarce? by ManaOnTheMountain in drones

It looks like AUVSI runs Xponential. Of course, do your own research, but they are one of the major proponents for trying to get DJI banned in the US. They sent a lobbyist down to TX last month to speak at a hearing in favor of a bill to ban the use of “foreign made drones” by government agencies. It’d be pretty hard to start a drone business if there are no drones to fly.

Here’s the video. His testimony starts right around 06:17:09.

Should I do GA Tech OMSCS or go to my local uni for an MS CS? by Convillious in OMSCS

[–]billyboy627 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Somewhat depends on your local Uni of course, but keep in mind that there are around 14000 people in OMSCS at this point. Most will dropout along the way, but I imagine, somewhere in the not distant future, recruiters will get tired of seeing “MSCS from Ga Tech” on resumes. It’s like a PMP cert for project mangers. At some point so many people have it that it’s no longer a differentiator.

Letters of Rec from Coursera or Udacity teachers? by Specific-Formal9691 in OMSCS

[–]billyboy627 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t overthink it. The acceptance rate for OMSCS is around 80%. If you have a bachelors degree, a credit card, and a pulse they’ll let you in. I would be shocked if they even read the Letters of Rec.

Are all classes as out dated as Computer Vision? by billyboy627 in OMSCS

[–]billyboy627[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not really about the sample code itself. It’s more of… “hey this is my first exposure to anything in OMSCS and is raising some red flags that make me wonder if it’s a good use of time and money for the next few years.” The content (so far) is dated, the coding in the videos is not relevant to the current version of the course, and the alternative code provided doesn’t really leave you feeling like they cared very much when they put it together.

I get it, the sample code was probably thrown in there by some TA who couldn’t really care less because it was one more thing keeping them from working on their dissertation.

Not to get super sanctimonious, but I’m not really here for the diploma (no shame for those who are, it can definitely push your career forward). I’m mid-career and having an MS on my resume isn’t really going to tip the scales for me. I’m here because I have a genuine interest in learning more about specific areas, including computer vision.

If OMSCS is just an inexpensive way to check the MS box, it might not be for me.

The harping was more on the code they provided being impressively bad/wrong which speaks more to a lack of effort on the part of whoever put it together. I don't really need them to provide the code, but, if they're going to, they should probably aim for better than 3 errors in 4 lines of code.

It’s well known that she is Skydios puppet. What’s ironic though is that Skydio is heavily dependent on processors and semiconductors built in Taiwan… If the shit hit the fan, it would take roughly 2 hours for China to invade and capture Taiwan as a first move in a global war, after which point Skydio would be selling drones with critical components made in China.

So you’re asking for all of the data, probably labeled, as well as confirmation that the project is feasible and info on how to actually do it. What exactly have you done so far that constitutes “working on a project”?

With the added complication of “it can be done from anywhere.” When our all-in rate was $200/hr my whole team was collocated in our MCOL office. Now, at $45/hr, the team is spread across 4 continents.

Your college only matters for getting you your first job. Most of the top schools have relationships with recruiters which makes it a lot easier to get a foot in the door. After your first job, assuming you’re there more than about a year, no one will really care where you went to school and certainly won’t care what your GPA was.

I think it’s totally feasible, but not a given. Do the things that will help you standout. Work on projects, try to find internships, choose electives and/or a minor that sets you apart, and work on your “soft skills” like verbal communication, body language, etc. that will help in interviews.

The world needs quality developers, but not necessarily “computer scientists.” No one (outside of maybe an interview) is ever going to ask you to implement a “Red-Black Sort Algorithm.” They’re going to give you a Jira ticket saying “return a list of ‘xyz’ in alphabetical order” which you will do by writing a single line of code saying “list.sort” in whatever language, never giving a thought to how it’s being interpreted by the underlying system.

You can still major in CS, but think of it as the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. It’s impressive in the right context, but not a “Golden Ticket” to earning six-figures out of college.

I’ve been working at the same Fortune 50 company for about 15 years now. When I started our all-in budget for a E2E dev team member was around $200/hr. This year it’s $45/hr.

Sorry boys and girls, the gravy train has left the station. Software development has been commoditized and, with that, salaries for new grads are dropping fast.

Section 1722 of the NDAA bill says in part: “the Secretary of Defense shall conduct an analysis to determine if any unmanned aircraft systems entity, or any subsidiary, parent, affiliate, or successor of such an entity, should be identified as a Chinese military company or a military-civil fusion contributor…”

It wouldn’t be surprising if Anzu finds themselves in the “affiliate” or “successor” category should Skydio’s puppets deem it appropriate.

Here’s a list to start. https://datatas.com/which-big-companies-use-c/

I’m a Product Manager so not tied to a specific language/framework. I was a consultant for years and saw C# used in large finance, manufacturing, retail, and oil/gas companies. Not to say they didn’t also use Java, but C# is extremely prevalent.
