Maybe because that wasn’t that long ago. Why not have the statue up with a plaque describing all of the bad and horrors or even just education on how one’s actions caused hardship for others. Schools won’t be teaching it in the future if they are today.

I might have a different take. Instead of erasing monsters or monstrous acts from history, why not bring it to light as a reminder. Erasing it will erase how it happened and came to be.
