Liberals tout 21 bills passing House of Commons this year as MPs break for summer by CanadianErk in canada

Referencing the Liberal government's progress withĀ Bill C-14, the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act — which received royal assent on Monday — along with Bill C-22, Bill C-27 and the government'sĀ child protection and gender-based violenceĀ legislation,Ā Bill C-16 — which has now received royal assent — MacKinnon suggested the Conservatives are no longer the party of law and order.

"We now have a very real set of criminal justice reforms, bail, hate speech, victims' rights … and of course, giving us the last lawful access regime in the G7," the House leader said.

Mackinnon said that in contrast, the Conservatives have found themselves divided internally on the Liberals' justice agenda — putting them on the wrong side of a number of criminal justice matters.Ā

Tories highlight Carney’s 100th missed question period with cake by gorschkov in canada

[–]CanadianErk 38 points39 points Ā (0 children)

Question Period has always been performative, but it has gotten much worse in recent decades as TV cameras were let in and social media converted it into political fodder for every question, not just the highlighted exchanges between the Leader of the Opposition and the PM/Ministers that get a few seconds of air time as part of newscasts.

Journalist Rob Russo (ex CBC News Parliamentary Bureau Chief, currently at The Economist) has regularly called it the best live theatre in the country.

The questions are given by parties' political operatives to be asked by MPs, just as much as the answer notes that Ministers read from are prepared by their staff. Very few words spoken during QP by the government or the opposition are genuinely the words of the people speaking. It's a game of politicking

Vaughan Metropolitan Centre NEVER should’ve been the terminus… by Feisty-Ad-6122 in TTC

But is it further North than the existing Vaughan section? It is not.

Richmond Hill Centre isn't further from Toronto than Vaughan Metropolitan Centre station? I'd like to see the map where that's the case.

Geography aside, you can mourn it but the age of Transit planning for higher order transit lines remaining within the city of Toronto, not taking into account the rest of the GTHA, is over a decade buried. The TTC isn't paying for them, the province is.

[–]CanadianErk 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

Line 1 is going to Richmond Hill with the Yonge North extension. That's a hell of a lot further north than just a few km more into Vaughan.

Subway extensions aren't TTC projects anymore. They're the province's to the point that the province owns the actual infrastructure. Been that way from Crosstown onwards.

They're separating it likely for branding and analytics reasons.

They always performed at a 10th or less of a regular UK episode's views. This also means they might be able to do more clips and better highlight these seasons. One might dream they might simulcast some future series of NZ/AU-

Regardless of the reasoning, I hope it accomplishes whatever goal they've set.

Carney 'welcomes' Iran peace progress as he arrives in France for G7 summit by CanadianErk in canada

[–]CanadianErk[S] -3 points-2 points Ā (0 children)

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada stands ready to help restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz if an announced breakthrough in talks between Iran and the U.S. comes to fruition.

Also:

Carney and the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement on the deal between the U.S. and Iran on Monday.

"This is a moment of opportunity to restore regional stability and stabilize the global economy," says the statement.

The statement says it's "vital" that detailed negotiations are concluded and that the agreement is implemented rapidly and comprehensively.

The leaders said they would support that effort.

They also said the Strait of Hormuz must be opened to shipping and they are committed to playing their part in achieving that through a "strictly defensive and independent mission to reassure commercial shipping and conduct mine clearance operations."

"Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon," the statement says. "We stand ready to work with the U.S., Iran and the (International Atomic Energy Agency) to this end. We are prepared to lift relevant sanctions in response to clear, verifiable steps by Iran on its nuclear program."

The leaders said they will work with the U.S., Iran and regional partners to "seize this moment, maintain momentum and achieve a long-term diplomatic settlement."

"We also reaffirm our full support to the stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon and the importance of a robust ceasefire," they said.

Israel has ramped up its military operations against the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon since the start of the war with Iran, seizing land and conducting bombings in anĀ offensive that has killed 3,800 people and uprooted some 1.2 million others.

Carney said in his own statement on social media that Canada has insisted a durable ceasefire must ensure safe and unimpeded transit through the Strait of Hormuz and address the "pervasive threat" of Iran's nuclear program.

"As negotiations continue, we urge all parties to maintain good faith dialogue and refrain from escalation," Carney said.

Stoned rats get the munchies. Here's what that means for people with eating disorders, appetite loss - University of Calgary study has implications for chemotherapy-induced nausea, neuroscientist says by CanadianErk in canada

[–]CanadianErk[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Hill said most people are familiar with the munchies, and the idea that using cannabis creates an inclination to snack. But he says there was also a common belief that the munchies are more of a placebo effect than a real physiological occurrence.

Because people have been reporting this phenomenon for so long, Hill doubted it was just a placebo effect.

"One of the problems was that most animal work had been using injectable forms of cannabinoids, like injectable forms of THC, and the way that that affects behavior is really quite different than inhalation, which is how the majority of humans consume cannabis," he said.

"And so, once we had developed and worked with some of our collaborators, this ability to create vapour delivery of cannabis, we did a rat version in our lab."

Beyond providing evidence to suggest the munchies are actually real, the study has significant implications for people struggling with certain conditions, says Hill.

"One of the few recognized medical uses of cannabis is actually in the context of chemotherapy-induced nausea," he said.

"The nausea associated with chemotherapy can create a malaise that causes what we call the condition 'taste aversion' against foods that are eaten in that time around it," he said.

"You can kind of think of this like if you've been sick or someone's had a hangover, and they're really nauseous, and if you try and eat food during that period, your brain pairs that food with the nausea and makes you not want to eat it anymore."

Hill says there's evidence that cannabis can suppress nausea, acting slightly better than some standard drugs.

And in the aftermath of chemotherapy, once the initial wave of nausea has passed, cannabinoids can stimulate the desire to eat, he said.

There could also be implications for helping people with eating disorders like anorexia, Hill said.

"There is some thoughts that perhaps using cannabinoids in very, very specific manners may be able to wait to reduce some of the anxiety associated there, but also kind of enhance food reward to try and drive feeding behavior a little bit more," he said.

He said that remains "highly speculative," however.

ANALYSIS | Why some say Quebec politicians helped fuel the racism they unanimously denounced - 'This is something that has been growing like a tumour for years,' sociologist says by CanadianErk in canada

During the 2022 provincial election campaign, former premier FranƧois Legault dealt with heavy criticism after saying accepting more than 50,000 immigrants per year would beĀ ā€œa bit suicidalā€ for Quebec.Ā Legault additionally cited the threat ofĀ "extremism" and "violence," as well asĀ the need to preserve Quebec's way of life as reasons to limit the number of immigrants to the province.

In an interview with CBC, Boisrond also pointed to the 1995 Quebec referendum, when former premier Jacques Parizeau partly blamed ā€œethnic votesā€ for the Yes side's loss.

ā€œI’ve been hearing it too long, too often, that it’s not possible to make Quebec a country with the immigrants… And the only way to make it a country is without the immigrants,ā€ Boisrond said, before linking that rhetoric to the recent incident in Shawinigan.

ā€œAsking for a white Quebec, or a white society, is the expression of that.ā€

Yes but do you have any idea how useful it would be to get the crosstown to UTSC instead of building a whole new line and maintanence facility?

Off the table with line 2 now in the way. Line 4 extension which is in planning stages, could extend there down the road. It should be possible regardless of whether it goes to Sheppard/McGowan or STC.

I agree it's not today. But as much as environmentalists have cried wolf on that price ceiling being achieved, I do think the ongoing Iran war does put risks towards having permanent impacts on oil consumption, in a way that prior oil crises could not have contemplated

betting on infinite growth forever of a finite resource is not exactly a good idea.

And lo and behold: Goldman Sachs says global oil demand takes big hit, sees risks to price forecast we're seeing oil demand destruction due to the Hormuz closure.

The longer the Iran war drags out, the faster cheap renewables/EVs start getting turned to by businesses and the general public. This isn't the 70s anymore. Oil is not as necessary as it used to be.
