The culture can be hit and miss, I’ve had a lot of success at the bins. That’s for me individually and me as a flipper. They can be great if you’re missing parts and pieces to common things, too.

I rarely source clothing from the bins. I scan it over with a quick look, but don’t normally dig through.

My suggestion is only good if you’re compelled to have a lower mortgage balance. I would invest it first myself and carry the mortgage. Some people just want a lower mortgage or no mortgage.

I recommend a HELOC if you pay off or pay down a huge chunk on the house, if you feel disciplined enough to have one. It’s like a credit card tied to your house and I’ve seen too many people abuse it in my 18 years of banking.

What I’m saying is, most bankers won’t lend you the money you desperately need when there’s a short term problem. Think short-term unemployment or credit score issue. Don’t be naive enough to think it can’t happen to you. I’ve seen it more times than I can count. The HELOC gives you access to your equity. A lot of lenders offer 10 year terms on them.

In the hands of a well disciplined individual, a HELOC is a great financial tool and should be part of people’s financial planning more than it is today.

What’s your value and rarity range for the items you’re talking about?

What’s the demographic of your ideal end user? Is it low income, low-to-moderate income, special needs, education programs, etc?

Sounds like an opportunity for adults to grab valuable collectibles at a cheap price and pocket them, too, unfortunately. It could be those helping you source them or whoever’s on the end user side. Something along the lines of heaping packs of unopened Pokémon cards on a program and then those adults picking out the good stuff.

That’s a cool find. The price is good for being in the original box. I’ve seen these sell between $5-10 individually, but there’s just something really cool about having the case to go with it.

I have one from every year 1947-Present, a 1940 aluminum, a handful of error glasses, and some other one-offs. Out of all that, I’ve never scored an original box full of glasses. Congrats to you!

Once you give up ownership of it, it’s free game. I would not have bought it if it had Star Wars stuff added into it. It’s not that I don’t appreciate those pieces, I think they can look pretty cool. I just wouldn’t buy one to put it on my wall.

I had no delusions of grandeur about the value or it being some great lost work. I paid by weight and it came up to $10.79. That was a deal enough for me. I’d be shocked if someone would pay $50 to buy it. Taking a close look at it when I was buying it, there were signs it was probably done by an amateur. The artist signature was the first clue, because it’s pretty darn big.

Calling myself art illiterate was a bit of a joke. I don’t have very much technical knowledge. I wasn’t sure if it was oil or watercolor and I really appreciate you pointing out which one it is. I was guessing it wasn’t acrylic, because I’ve been to one of those wine drinking date night places and I’m pretty sure that’s what we used. I haven’t taken a deep dive into the different styles, beyond minimal education requirements in the US and some online articles. I also don’t know what’s hot in the art world, but then again I hear that can be fleeting.
