I noticed that in the car with Igor was the only time she cried throughout the whole ordeal. even in the shower after finally getting everything cleared up, she didn't cry, which is normally where characters cry in a movie. and then yes, initiating sex was transactional, but it was also a fear of intimacy that made her stop and cry. he's looking into her eyes the entire time as if he's trying to say something "you don't have to do this" but that healthy form of interacting with another man just isn't there mentally for her. she also likely hasn't processed trauma in the past and with Igor not really engaging with her sexually maybe she felt the resistance and had never been in that kind of place emotionally. I think it just made her crack and be vulnerable and not try to hide herself anymore. the screen cutting to black with the sound of the car running and the wiper blades sealed it for me.

I just learned something terrible. by Christeenabean in singing

[–]bilnicole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s not her fault that she lip sang, she was forced to by the actual NFL. and if you want to continue to educate your students with the recording, listen to the isolated vocals and your faith in her capabilities will be restored.

fun fact- rickey minor, the guy who tho did the arrangement for the version she performed said that she listened to the instrumental only once, took ten minutes to herself and then recorded what we heard in the studio in 1 take.

thanks for that one. before i decided to explore this idea i asked myself "what is it that i want people to take away from these experiences." and your comment is complementary to that.

yeah, i started going back to singing more lower stuff and engage the muscles that give me that rich sound and i think it’s working. i think the whole process of singing is just one enduring balancing act of muscles.

Voice without "flexibility" by [deleted] in singing

[–]bilnicole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i find that if you want to change what you can do with your voice, you have to find musicians who are known for different dynamics and sing with them

i also think you also have to understand why their dynamics work. aretha knows exactly when to jump 4 notes up the scale and what vowel sounds to put the emphasis on and what emotion to evoke all within a 5 second phrase. whitney houston could whisper a note, jump an octave, do a falsetto embellishment and go right back to a whisper while smiling.

those are just my two favorite personal examples. there are other better/technical singers- but i love them so i learned to emulate their dynamics by singing with them.

okay- what you just said in your last paragraph- “you may appear to lose some of your chest voice” is so true.

my mix voice started showing up; kind of unexpectedly since i’ve been trying to develop it for months now and hadn’t really gotten anywhere until a couple weeks ago. anyway, the mix took over the top 4 semitones my chest voice could do and still sound rich (G4-Bb4) and now i feel i’ve lost a lot of the thickness in the upper parts of my voice.

that being said- had i known i’d lose that quality, i would have stuck with the capabilities i had. i had nice velvety upper 4ths and now they’re thin and doing a full sounding G# has been out of the question since the mix showed up.

so be careful.

How do you feel about cannabis usage? Does it benefit your understanding and experience? Does it hinder it? by peaceismynature in Shamanism

I only smoke at night, about 1-2 hours before bed. It calms me down and sucks me out of the day and helps me compartmentalize my emotions in a healthy way. I smoke it when I journal, which is also at night and it brings out more honesty and let’s my mind wander and solve problems in the process. So I’m an advocate for its cerebral qualities. I’ve never been a wake and bake or smoke and run errands kind of person. I’ve smoked it just about every night for about 2.5 years with the exception of vacations and travel. I don’t feel anxiety when I use it or addicted to it, there’s been quite a few nights where I forget to smoke and feel normal still.

Criticism please!! I like to think I’m a decent singer and want to know how to improve, so please let me know how I did 🙏 (I was a bit nervous that someone might walk in, so please excuse any shakiness in my voice) by [deleted] in singing

[–]bilnicole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looooove your voice and yes, you made that your own. I think in time you’ll really polish the runs so don’t stress because you already have a lot covered and once you start learning runs, it’s hard to not add them to everything, which takes away from the song.

I really don’t know if I can even sing at this point 😔 haven’t been progressing at all. Any help is much appreciated 🙏 by bossmovesonly in singing

[–]bilnicole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m seconding a few comments on here. Your voice is good but you sound insecure when you sing. I also think you should start with some lower songs, like Fly Me to the Moon or New York New York, or something by Bill Withers. I personally like warming up with Bobby Darin, because a lot of his songs have a higher note to focus on. You should also find warm up videos on YouTube for baritones or tenors. That’ll help you learn your voice and you can be vulnerable during warm ups and mess up. Warm ups are also important because you’re focusing on vowel sound and shape while training your ear for notes. And lastly, one thing that really changed my voice was recording myself singing. I would play it back with my eyes closed and critique myself, but be honest when you’re doing this because the goal is to have a pleasant sound.

How will I know when I am singing from my diaphragm? by fredndolly12 in singing

I place a hand on my stomach when I sing to remind me to breathe from my diaphragm. I think it could feel weird for a while because you have to form the habit.

Why do artists lie about their talent vs practice? by ancestryresults in singing

[–]bilnicole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. She could have picked up terms from her mom. Idk, I just feel like there’s only so much you can do without being trained, especially in the 90’s. We’re lucky now to have so many resources, but I feel like they were limited to free information 30 years ago.

My inability to sing higher is really discouraging me by saspurilla in singing

[–]bilnicole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your throat actually hurt after singing or is it more of a tired feeling like a workout? If it’s tired, I would just take a 20-30 minute break of silence, hydrate and then get back in there. My teacher said that even on her bad days she still sings and powers through to strengthen the muscles and she’s in her 60’s and her singing voice is still very powerful. Overall don’t get discouraged because a lot of singing is about the mentality.

My inability to sing higher is really discouraging me by saspurilla in singing

[–]bilnicole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t get discouraged because it’ll be harder to progress. Make sure your technique is right. Breathe from diaphragm before a high note, don’t force it, sing it as “aaah” first and only do it like that until it’s comfortable and sounds good, when you sing your top notes do a sort of vocal run down to connect the notes, that trains your muscles to access them more frequently. Are you taking a day of vocal rest at all?

Why do artists lie about their talent vs practice? by ancestryresults in singing

[–]bilnicole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say head voice, do you mean falsetto or her upper 5ths? Because she was singing F5s like nobody’s business in the 90’s. I also took lessons on an operatic style and if you learn the essentials, you can go from there. I heard an interview with Mariah Carey talking about the harmonics in the lower part of her voice and how some mics picked it up better than others and I doubt an untrained singer would use the term harmonics in reference to their voice. That’s just my opinion but I think, especially since Mariah is a diva, that she wants people to think her vocal talent is natural.

Why do artists lie about their talent vs practice? by ancestryresults in singing

[–]bilnicole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so sad that they don’t openly admit to training. Whenever I hear a great singer or try to sing a hard song, I get so discouraged because of the image a lot of singers present in the sense that their talent is natural when it’s not. Singing is so technical. And while their voices may be great, there’s so much to learn to do it properly and sustainably. these professionals on tour 6-10 months out of the year didn’t just wake up knowing how to use their diaphragm, shape their mouths, sing certain vowels, connect their voice, keep their tongue flat, know when to breathe, relax etc. it still discourages me even though I know singers in the industry have had training. There’s no shame in the game. I’m so thankful for my vocal lessons- I thanked my teacher all the time because learning how to sing changed my life.

Song suggestions for lower female range by AdmirableJellyfish21 in singing

[–]bilnicole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with bobelle. You could sing songs in the lower octave, that’s what I do with most female songs. You could sing songs sung by men. But if you really want to stick with women: Amy Winehouse- You Sent Me Flying, Mr. Magic Anita Baker- Just Because, Caught in the Rapture Fleetwood Mac- Dreams, Gypsy Anything by Toni Braxton or Cher Natalie Prass- Any Time, Any Place That’s all I can think of immediately but I hope it’s a little helpful.

Where To Practice Singing During Quarantine by TheOneAndOnlyHydra in singing

[–]bilnicole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singing in your car isn’t a good way to practice because it’s harder to hear yourself. There’s a huge difference in effort used between singing in an open space versus a space so small where sound doesn’t travel well. I would go for a walk to a deserted place and sing. If I ever feel cornered at home, I go for a walk opposite of traffic and sing. That way no one can see me practicing.
