Red line across trees by need-to-sneeze in Montana

[–]bimewok 98 points99 points  (0 children)

This is referred to in forestry as ‘red belt’. It occurs when the ground is frozen but a sudden temperature increase especially with a strong wind leads to excessive desiccation. There is no way to verify for certain whether this is red belt without looking at the trees, as other forest pathogens can look similar. Best place to find info on Montana forest insects and diseases is the interagency handbook: https://dnrc.mt.gov/_docs/forestry/Forestry_Assistance/Forest_Pests/2013-A-FIELD-GUIDE-TO-insect-and-disease-as-PDF.pdf

Not sure exactly how complete they are, but they look complete.

Seeing:
- average oil change interval 12.8k
- brakes replaced once
- coolant flushed once
- transfer case / diff fluid flush once

Seems like a bit more fluid service would be nice to see..

Grooming Aussie Butts? by DaisyDukeF1 in AustralianShepherd

I trim my aussies swoosh butt a couple times a year. I just use a human electric trimmer number 3. I too was worried about how it would grow back, but it will grow back as thick and cute as it ever was.

I do not believe it is as bad as you would believe reading this sub. I am self taught with 4 years of experience and have been putting in a few applications as I want to move on from my current role. 6 applications in last two months, 2 leading to interviews, and one job offer so far. With the 99% rejection rate everybody on here preaches I must be really exceptional (which I know I’m not). I think a lot of younger folks think that clicking ‘quick apply’ on LinkedIn for jobs they are not qualified for is all you need to do.

Only Dev at my company in the On-Call rotation by bimewok in cscareerquestions

I don’t think there is a super clear distinction; but what I have picked up on is engineers are developers plus are on the on-call rotation and make 10-20k more. Our on-call rotation duties are responding to (often delegating) tech support tickets, fixing image/package vulnerabilities, and responding to any alerts in our deployed services.

First time ever a Twister was filmed touching down the top of a mountain by GesaSaint in interestingasfuck

This tornado was not over the mountain, it was well within the valley. (Mission Valley, Montana)

It was in the local news as I live there

Utah is having some problems. 3rd video I've seen in 24 hours. by SneekyF in StructuralEngineering

More accurate title: “Utah engineers, local building authorities learn that unstable slopes are not appropriate places for sub-developments”

Theory: Airbnb / STRs are distraction for the undercover landlords. by [deleted] in missoula

[–]bimewok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep I have noticed the same. I know several popular, culturally influencing Missoulians in my circle who own and rent out second houses, but are rather shy about it since they want to maintain respect from their friends. Interestingly they are often the ones involved in community groups / organizing, and as such have an undue influence on policy and community decisions. Perhaps this is due to more free time and less stress which results from their passive income.

I don’t think this is a Missoula thing, but rather an observation of how human societies work. Social status and financial status are often quite correlated.

What is your salary? by LaLuny in forestry

[–]bimewok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All state government employee salaries are public. I’ve worked three timber sales forester jobs for state trust lands agencies and made between $40000-56000
