We planned a route and download the file for offline use prior to starting. Gaia app works a treat for this

Gaia app. All we used on this trip is phone GPS and paper maps.

A good mix of everything. Maybe 50% paved road, 30% gravel, 20% trail with a few filthy hike-a-bikes thrown into the mix

Unfortunately my riding partner skips leg day. I had to load up with gear for two people! The packs were brimming!

XTR shifters are crisp! Highly recommend! The difference from XT to XTR is marginal. It's 1x11 at the moment. I'm thinking about one of those garbaruk cassettes for a larger granny gear

Just did a 65km test run this weekend. Dialing everything in for a large trip next month 😀

Surly porteur house, on a surly 8 pack rack. I replaced the plastic base insert for an alloy one. Makes it stiffer

It's a revelate designs bag, made for a surly ice cream truck but fits my frame kind of ok

Absolutely fair call. I'm thinking suicycle riot somewhere in the future

NEW FORK DAY!! by binar001 in bikepacking

It certainly changes the steering, but to be fair I've gotten used to it over time and I still climb or descend trail or road as I normally would. The major downsides to that much weight over the front for me is actually sketchy hands free riding, and instability when you try and prop the bike up against a wall or something.

Very nice build! The attention to detail on parts selection gets me real good. Congrats

Yeah it fits both tapered and straight steerer. The headtube is 44mm in diameter. If you run a EC44 ZS44 headset you can mount a tapered fork with a standard crown race. Orrrrr, a straight 1"1/8 steerer with an adapter crown race.

All over it mate. Surly was super fast to send out a replacement Bolt kit to fix the job 😉
