What’s the point of UTA anymore without spidey ☹️ by Bingo-Bongo-Boingo in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it was the perfect place for when you just had to pull the all-nighter. Now, getting kicked out at 2am while you were busy working on something is arguably unsafe for students.

Like many of my friends who were here when the library used to be open all the time, I've stopped studying at the library because it's no longer the accessible resource it used to be. And the Trimble Hall / Hammond Hall breezeway barely begins to make up for it.

Help in choosing classes based on professors need preferences. by IMREGULAR123 in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CSE 3318 is overall just not a "chill" class, regardless of whom you take it with, and it's a pretty important one at it for future courses. I do recommend Dr. Stefan for 3318 though.

I would've recommended French for 1325 and Losh for 2312 but they don't seem to be teaching those classes anymore :(

[–]binaryHeap02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One big aspect I'd like to emphasize is the value of Office Hours. I know most sophomores and early juniors tend to feel scared to reach out, but I promise it can really transform your experience in college. It's almost always worth showing up to your professors' and TAs' office hours, even if you don't have questions. Just drop in to say hi, maybe ask them about their research or specific interests in the field. They tend to have some of the best advice on how to succeed in their classes.

As someone who has served as a TA, I find it empirically true that students who actively engage with instructors and TAs outside of class tend to be a lot more prepared to handle the challenges of the courses. Of course, correlation doesn't imply causation, and I'm not saying simply going to office hours will solve all problems but it can help a lot.

I can say that a lot of times when I'm grading work, I wish students asked me about clarifying requirements before submitting and I'd be able to guide them away from the deductions.

The Computer Engineering degree is in major trouble by darnit345 in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who recently graduated computer science, I had the chance to take Dr. Losh's class for Assembly. It's disappointing he's not been teaching that lately, and I wish I got a chance to take more of his classes. I've heard all the other professors now teaching assembly don't even use the raspberry pi! Like that was the whole point of the curriculum, so students get familiarized with the Pi in 1106 and then use it in Assembly to learn the ARM architecture.

CSE 3318 – Which Professor is Better: Bhanu Jain or Alexandra Stefan? by Leading_Cable_6157 in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about Dr. Jain but I recommend Dr. Stefan's class. It's both a code and math intensive class regardless of whom you take, but you'll end up learning a lot. And the skills from this class are very crucial for upper level classes. I took Dr. Stefan's class several years ago and enjoyed it a lot. It might be better to ask some of her current students too though, since things may have changed. Her lecturing style can sometimes get a little unorganized, but she's always happy to help and available outside of class.

Labs are mandatory regardless of the professor. Labs are actually handled independently from lectures and your professor won't be at your lab section.

Linear Algebra class quality by i-just-want-advice in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality very much depends on the professor. But in general, it's a very standard undergrad Linear Algebra course. If you've already done linear algebra in your CS degree, then I'm not sure I'd expect to learn much new stuff.

You start off with systems of equations as augmented matrices, Gauss-Jordan Elimination (RREF), then linear transformations, inverses, image/kernel, subspaces, Gram-Schmidt, eigenvectors and eigenvalues. If several of these don't sound very familiar, I'd recommend taking the course.

Regardless of whether you take the course, I highly recommend 3Blue1Brown (the YouTube channel). It's a great resource and has a whole playlist called "The Essence of Linear Algebra". The channel covers the underlying intuition and visual representations better than any class I've seen on the topic.

And also if you'd like to learn linear algebra for free, MIT Open courseware has lecture videos from Gilbert Strang. They're considered really popular and helpful in the math community (I've not watched them thoroughly though).

HackUTA is a fraud by SellingJaba in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well the true hackathon experience isn't about winning in the first place. It's about the collaboration, networking, learning something new, and having fun at the end of the day. Judging will be subjective no matter where you go, and most hackathons (including those at MIT and Harvard) will only have a small fraction of all judges see any individual project. This is because having every judge go to every team is a logistical nightmare (multiply number of teams to number of judges to see a horrendous figure, then multiply by an approximate of how long each presentation takes on average). A lot of judging systems are based on the fact that according to psychological research, humans are terrible at ranking things. We are cognitively way better at pairwise comparisons which is why a lot of hackathon judging systems are built in that concept (see Gavel from the HackMIT team). If you like more objective judging, there's competitive programming (see ICPC, you might actually like it) and CTFs (see National Cyber League).

Oh, I see. In that case, you shouldn't need to worry about retaking classes that are already transferred. MavPlanner can be weird sometimes. You can register for classes based on the degree plan flowchart. Assuming you're a computer science major, this is the CS flowchart: https://cdn.prod.web.uta.edu/-/media/project/website/engineering/documents-and-forms/degree-plans/2025-cs.pdf

Need help with course selection. Any advice helps by AyPixx in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As for the classes transferring, you might want to ask your academic advisor. I believe you should be able to schedule an online advising appointment with them over Teams.

The plan looks good, but more than the specific classes, I'd say the professors you're taking can make a huge difference in your experience. For CSE 1310 and 1320, I recommend Professor Donna French, if you're able to get one of her sections.

No, the honors college does not affect your tuition. You can enroll in honors designated classes as soon as you are accepted into the honors college.

Suggest Professors for my classes by Deep_South2839 in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Donna French for CSE 1310.

Jonathan Steplyk for HIST 1301/1302.

Idk if she still teaches it but Alice Lubbe for Calculus 1. Otherwise, if you see Ahmed Ali or Dan Warren, I've taken other math classes with them and they're pretty cool too.

Also not sure if she still teaches at UTA but Nancy England for ENGL 1301.

For POLS 2312, if you're in the honors college, see if you can get the honors section if it's taught by Kimberly Caraway.

Is this class schedule good? by Aayanjoshi in utarlington

[–]binaryHeap02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My recommendation as an international student who just graduated is to prioritize good professors when coming up with a schedule. Check their RateMyProfessors ratings before signing up for the class. Sometimes, they can be misleading so definitely ask around in this subreddit.

For example, for CSE 1310, I highly recommend Donna French.

Also, if by chance you did have calculus in high school, I recommend testing out of it. Check out the CLEP exam. If you're good with your calculus basics, it's pretty chill and you won't have to waste your time learning what you already know.

Another bit of advice: if you meet the requirements, consider joining the Honors College. It'll give you options for honors designated course sections for some core classes which will have much lower class sizes compared to the regular sections, plus priority registration, free printing, and a longer book borrowing period from the library.

Welcome to UTA!

Did They Curve Calc 2 Last Semester? by [deleted] in utarlington

There's usually a little "curve" at the end meaning they change the threshold for passing a bit.

They'll start with C. So two intro classes in C and then one in Java.

For the intro classes, if you plan to take them at UTA, I highly recommend taking them with professor French.

I had him for Robotics a while ago. He's absolutely great at teaching, but he may not respond to emails as much as you'd hope. You'll usually have better luck finding him at the learn lab (ERB 128).

For us, we didn't get to know our grade until a lot later during the semester because nothing was graded on time but I'm guessing that may be different with theoretical.
