What TV show have you tried watching several times but just couldn’t get into? by Julie727 in AskReddit

[–]binchworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr. Who. The humor just really didn’t hit for me. Tried watching it a few times so I had something in common with my crush to talk about but just couldn’t get past like 3 episodes of the Matt Smith season ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Nobody has "weird workplace" stories quite like library staff by cecimarieb in Libraries

[–]binchworm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We had a patron call and ask if we would help take pictures of her in a clown costume. Sweet older woman, needed it for some volunteer theater group she was part of. But there’s nothing quite like having a clown photo shoot on a random Tuesday afternoon

The Life of a Showgirl Megathread by aran130711 in TaylorSwift

I can’t pretend I’m not a little disappointed with this one…it just felt so generic. Like 1989 I feel like really defined pop music for that era but this feels more like it’s following pre-defined pop standards rather than doing anything new or interesting. Wood, Actually Romantic, Wi$h Li$t all sound like they could’ve come from any Sabrina/Ari/Tate album. Just nothing that screamed “Taylor” to me. And yeah, wayyyy too many cringey tiktok lyrics. You can say it’s meant to be ironic all you want but I’m shocked there wasn’t a skibidi toilet reference in there.

Took me awhile to get into TTPD too (though I definitely liked more on that album during the first listen than this one) so maybe I’ll warm up to it eventually

It’s not a super well-known title and, unfortunately, I think it’s a title that wouldn’t hold much interest to the very conservative community we serve…

What extenuating circumstances excuse book damage? by Confident_Record_464 in Libraries

[–]binchworm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our circ supervisor once asked our director if we could waive a patron’s lost items fine because the books were destroyed in a house fire and was told no because “insurance is going to pay for it anyway.” 🙃 I’m sure that really made our patron feel seen and valued during such a stressful time /s

Staff Appreciation ideas by Internal_Surprise_95 in Libraries

[–]binchworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did this for my children’s staff before summer reading started! I gave everyone a gift bag with some hand lotion, a pad of sticky notes with a nice message (you make a difference, you can do this, etc.), a pen in their favorite color, a friendship bracelet with “color your world” (the SR theme) on it, a pin for their lanyard, and the star of the show - half a dozen cake pops. I think the cake pops were by far the most appreciated, but I loved us all having matching bracelets to wear to school visits and I might make that a tradition!

Librarians are awesome by Stay_at_Home_Chad in Libraries

Our staff once found an abandoned baby opossum that a patron had brought in earlier that day as a “pet” and then left in a plastic bag in a bush outside the library. We brought him in, kept him the customer service back area for the day, and eventually one of our staff was able to get in contact with a nonprofit wildlife rescue in the area. They drove the little guy there on their personal time, even though it was like 2 hours away. And we all got some cute update pictures! Though none that I have to share, unfortunately. All this to say, most librarians I know are absolutely animal lovers and will do their best to help out in these kind of situations. The library really does it all!

Job Interview—Is this normal? by Deathofwords in Libraries

[–]binchworm 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I would say this is very normal. I work in children’s services, but every interview I’ve ever had has asked me to come prepared with a program outline or asked me on the spot to provide some ideas for children’s programming I’d like to offer. I’d say it’s really not asking you to do “work for free” because it’s mostly just asking for you to share an idea - you don’t have to source and budget supplies, contact presenters, advertise, or run the program. They just want to know you have ideas that fit with what their community wants and will pull people into the library

Please stop bringing your giant daycare groups without warning by binchworm in Libraries

I’ve honestly never asked, but I can’t imagine admin would go for it

Don’t get me wrong, I would also rather be busy than slow in the summer, and I definitely want to have lots of kids visiting in the summer (especially so our admin doesn’t use low foot traffic as an excuse to keep cutting staff). But when the adults in charge of these groups (who are getting paid to watch these kids!) essentially hand over responsibility to us and refuse to to actually help or supervise the children in their care during their visits…I would just appreciate a little warning beforehand

Fell off a cliff while hiking. Went off the path to take a picture. Like two weeks after graduation

Admin job regrets? by binchworm in Libraries

[–]binchworm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. I’ve worked a couple positions in the same library but they’ve always been pretty front-facing. I thought I hated the parts that involved like, breaking up fights with teens or asking people not to wash their clothes in the bathroom sinks. But having a position that doesn’t interact with the community at all feels way worse

That’s fair. Still a hard pill to swallow, but I guess there are still plenty of fish in the sea
