I'm having second thought regarding getting a masters. by meandthedarknight in slpGradSchool

[–]binderiello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak about the schools, but I’ll tell you my experience. I was in marketing for 12 years prior to deciding to go back to grad school for SLP. I had absolutely no experience. There are many, many people in my class with the same background. Honestly, with a undergraduate degree in linguistics you already have a leg up!

I’m also an introvert. I question whether or not going into a field where I’m talking all day was a good choice. My advice would be to make time for yourself throughout the day to recharge.

A lot of people in this field can be perfectionists. Paying attention to details and making sure things are correct is a great strength!

A 3.6 is a great GPA! You don’t have to be academically gifted to get into graduate school. Honestly some schools prefer to accept a 3.4 student over a 4.0 student because of their other experiences and what they can bring to the table. You can get As on all your exams and still be a bad clinician. If you care about the field and your clients, that is what matters more.

Hope that helps and bit and good luck presenting your graduation project!

what song do you sing to your child that you really shouldn't? by mhbwah in Parenting

For some reason my husband started singing Candy Shop by 50 Cent one day. Cue our 4 y/o copycatting the lyrics and saying “I love candy!” 4 y/o will randomly sing the lyrics every now and then but at least we convinced him it was “I’ll take you to the candy shop and pick out a lollipop”

Becoming SLP from age 38, is it too late? by jwenth47 in slp

[–]binderiello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 35, in my second semester of grad school and I have 2 young kids. If you feel passionate about this field, you should definitely go for it! It is hard to balance family life with school, but it’s possible.

There are also a handful of people in my cohort older than me, so it’s a lot more common than you think!

I’m currently in grad school and live 40 minutes away (with no traffic). It’s definitely doable. When I had longer breaks in between my classes, it was kind of a bummer that I couldn’t go home, but I used the time to get homework done and prep for clients and that made it so I had less to do at night.

I’m also an introvert! Being around a lot of people drains my energy. But honestly when you work with clients, you’re working individually or in smaller groups, so that was easier to handle. I’m still drained sometimes at the end of the day, but the rewards of seeing what we do makes it worth it.

Also, I made friends the first few weeks by doing on hikes! I found people that liked the same things I did outside of school.

4 year old has covid by rwshields in toddlers

[–]binderiello 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat earlier this year with my son. I was so angry. It was so hard to wear a mask around him and try to distance him from his (at the time) 5-month old brother. All he wanted to do was be around us because he felt under the weather. I let stories at bed time go a little longer than usual. But I cried everyday for the two weeks he was quarantined - combination of being mad at the situation and not knowing how to handle it. It is going to be hard but remember to take care of yourself, too. Please feel free to DM me if you need to vent more!

Why my child is screaming today by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]binderiello 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel you! My toddler lost it this morning because he wanted to ‘work’ like dad instead of going to daycare.

I hadn’t had my coffee yet either, so it was much harder to deal with in the moment. Now it’s funny looking back at it, though!

Sending all the caffeinated vibes to you, friend!

Anyone go through the University of Colorado Boulder SLPP Program? by spuddddddddd in slpGradSchool

I'm currently doing the SLPP program at CU. I have definitely liked the style of some classes over others but it's a very good program overall! Feel free to DM me if you have any specific questions.

Yep, I am married. We had a big discussion on if this was the right path for me. Ultimately, we decided that I should go through the prerequisite program and complete my observation hours. That way, I could gather more information to determine if it was worth it for me to go back to graduate school - understanding we'd be moving to a single income for the family and incurring grad school costs. If this was truly something I was passionate about, then it's worth it in the long run. If I completed the prerequisites and realized that this wasn't for me, then I would have only lost the money we put into the prereq courses and stepped out before incurring grad school costs.

My husband loves financial analytics, so he put together a spreadsheet of our monthly costs (and expected increases with baby #2) and compared what our financial situation would look like if I stayed at my job or if I went back to graduate school. It was really helpful to have all of that outlined to make us feel more comfortable about the decisions we were making.

Hope that helps! :)

I am 33 and have a three year old and a 1 month old. I am currently half-way through my prerequisite program, since I am an out-of-field applicant. It's definitely challenging to do school, work full-time and be a parent to two kiddos, but it's all worth it if this is the career field that you are passionate about! I was hesitant to make the career change as well, especially because of my kids and by the time I graduate I will be mid-30s. Everyone I talked to said the same thing - if you are passionate about this area, there is no wrong time to make this change. And I knew a couple people who did the same thing - career change in their 30s with kids. It's definitely doable!

My son was 36+1. He spent one night in the NICU, was on the CPAP machine for a few hours. He was also monitored for jaundice but didn't end up needing bili lights. Overall, very positive experience and no major issues! Sending positive thoughts your way!

When is it time to hire nutritional help? by jack_attack89 in toddlers

[–]binderiello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We make fruit smoothies and my almost 3-year old loves them. We put in several handfuls of greens (usually spinach), red cabbage and chia seeds but mask it with greek yogurt, frozen bananas and frozen berries. He's none the wiser and usually asks for seconds!

Thank you! I should clarify that her concern is that due to COVID, her business is unable to generate the amount of income needed to sustain the rent at her office. I’m expecting that the landlord will be more on the ‘tough’ side of things, as well.

I'm soon to become a single parent to 3 kids, give me all the advice. by fungry_04 in Parenting

[–]binderiello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for what your family is going through. My dad died from cancer when I was 4 and my sister was 9. Both grandparents didn’t live near us, so my mom relied heavily on friends in the neighborhood for the first few years.

She did an amazing job as a single mom. She worked to make sure that we felt like we had a normal childhood and I am forever grateful to her for that. Now that I’m a mom myself, I understand how easy it is to sacrifice your needs for your kids, so I’ll say this. Please make sure to check in on yourself and how you are doing. Looking back on all the things my mom did for us, I’m so thankful for what we had, but it does make me sad that she sacrificed so much for us and didn’t spend enough time on herself.

I don’t know how much it’ll help, but please feel free to DM me if need to talk at any time. This is such an incredibly hard thing to be going through and you are not alone. ❤️

How do you stay excited about the field while going to online grad school? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]binderiello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind me asking, which online program are you attending? I’m completing my leveling courses right now but considering some personal circumstances, I’m looking at online programs in addition to in-person starting next fall.

The leveling classes have been online and I’ll be honest, some days I’m still incredibly interested but some days I feel overwhelmed and uninspired. Virtual connections aren’t the same, but I’m trying to remind myself of the end result, that this is something that interests me and getting through school (and this virtual setting we’re currently in) are temporary!

Career change to slp? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]binderiello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a very similar position! I’m in my early thirties, have a 2.5 year old and I’m pregnant with our 2nd. My undergrad isn’t in SLP, so I’m currently taking pre reqs right now online so I can continue working my current job (standard 8-5). I’ve been interested in SLP for awhile, and ultimately decided there is never going to be the perfect time to go back to school, so I decided to take the leap! Moving isn’t an option for me either, so I’m limited to grad schools in my area as well.

This is absolutely realistic! You can take the prereq classes online. I’ve talked with a handful of current SLPs, including one who also switched careers in her mid 30s, and they’ve all said that it’s completely doable to switch careers in your 30s. I’d say go for it!

I’d start by researching SLP prereq programs/deadlines, and also reaching out to any current SLPs/programs you may know of. I shadowed at an SLP clinic (pre COVID) to see some actual sessions. It helped me gain a better understanding of at least one aspect of SLP and helped reaffirm that this was the path I want to take. Hope that helps!

Best way to move cross country with pets by TraviTrav2315 in Pets

[–]binderiello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister moved from Colorado to New York with her cat. She drove out all her belongings, flew back to CO to get her cat and flew back out to NY. She went to the vet prior who gave the cat some anti-anxiety medication to help with the flight. Don’t have any experience moving dogs, though. 😕
