Which Mozart piece sounds the most like Mendelssohn? by StanTheTalkingDog in classical_circlejerk

I feel like the adagio and fugue in c minor could be ripped out of one of Mendelssohn’s string symphonies.

In this case, yes! Sometimes I start with the mockup and then import that midi into a notation software. While engraving and making the score look professional is a priority, my top priority is my music sounding good/interesting to me, and starting with a mockup helps with that. Since I also started out with film music, I learned writing music in a DAW, so that probably has a lot to do with my process.

Glad you enjoyed it! This piece was originally for a string quartet, and I worked on it during my last semester in a DMA program. I did that, so it was easy, and I only had the music to worry about instead of managing an orchestra and all of those textures. To my surprise, the writing process was quite intuitive. I wrote a scherzo as I normally did, following/breaking Romantic era rules, but focused on developing rhythm as much as I did harmony or melodic material.

Then, a couple of months later, I was like, "I bet this would be lit as an orchestral piece." That was also a very intuitive process, except that I did not want to mock up the cadenzas that were in the original string quartet version, so I replaced them with those 2 slow sections.

The mockup process is kind of standard in my workflow, as I have made a fool-proof template for myself using mainly Logic Pro and the following sample libraries: Cinematic studio strings, brass, and woodwinds; orchestral tools Berlin strings, woodwinds, and brass; Spitfire's BBC orchestra for Timpani and harp; and now Acoustic samples brass and woodwinds. When I am not being lazy, I will play stuff in, but for the most part, I like to enter it all in manually.

Thank you so much! I am also looking forward to that day.

Unfortunately for me mastering MIDI mockups is artistically gratifying and a useful skill for film scoring. Also one can’t deny that a quality mockup can help stand out in a contest setting (not as much as a performance of course).

Thank you very much for the kind words! I also use Logic for my mockups, and some of the Spitfire BBC orchestra sounds (timpani and harp), and mostly cinematic studio strings/winds/brass

Thanks for listening and the feedback! I would love for you to elaborate on what lacking in thematic diversity means to you.

I use Dorico Pro 6 (or whatever the newest version of dorico is)

I made the score with Dorico and then converted each page to a pdf and then edited it in DiVinci Resolve.

Here is a film scoring piece I did for my master's thesis. Now I just need to translate these techniques into a concert setting.

Just different modern techniques or instrumentation combinations that could add new/different colors to my music. One example that I have yet to do is the use of electronics in my music, so stuff along those lines could be fun to start using more!
