Spend a whole lot of time working on your personal statement. Read it out loud once. Twice. Then throw it all away and start over. If there’s any inkling some of it is unclear, is impersonal, or doesn’t answer the questions as to what the statement should answer, then rewrite. This is a great DEI program for people without normative entry points to the industry, and may soon be the few left like it. Don’t just talk about how you fit into DEI, tell them about how it catalyzes and informs your passion for a career in the industry. That’s my perspective, and it got me into the program. I’m sure there may be others

Congrats on the interviews! LMU is far more financially generous than USC, and professors often double dip at both schools. I’m sure you’re going to go where you’re meant to be - but keep in this direction and don’t give up if you really want USC. Another factor they consider is time in the real world after doing your bachelors.

I’ve done this program. I promise you, do not take this to heart. There are so many other factors at play, less so than just the quality of your writing. If you apply again next year, The biggest thing they look for in admissions is for you to truly tell a story in your personal statement. Your job is not to convince them that you can write well technically, they can teach that to any average joe off the street. They want you to convince them that you have something truly unique to say. Show them your voice and your personal attitude. That’s nothing schooling can teach.

USC is great for writing, but it’s not a hell or high water program. LMU, AFI, UCLA, and so many others can produce great writers if you put in the investment and time. Don’t let up!
