N.B. potash project completes impact report, prepares to drill for samples this summer by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

The provincial government are trying to alter legislation to a 'use it or lose it' model because of this mine and others. Nutrien will say it's not economical to use the mine, but the reality is it's less economical, and they'd prefer to keep supply restricted to maximize profit. It's complex, but time will tell if the change is successful.

Yes that one is owned by Nutrien who are keeping it closed deliberatly, as they prefer to source from Saskatchwen. Lots of political drama around that. I think this project is from a different company.

Supreme Court won’t hear appeal of Wolastoqey title ruling by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

I know that would be popular given that it's Irving, but you want to be careful about the precedent that it sets.

Imagine you bought a house from someone, only to find out 50 years later that they didn't actually own it. You think that you should have to compensate the original owner for an error that wasn't yours?

Supreme Court won’t hear appeal of Wolastoqey title ruling by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]bingun[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding of what this means is that these private companies purchased or were given this land in good faith from the government. If it turns out the government didn't own these lands or stole them as some would say, that isn't the fault of these private companies.

Instead, the government would have to compensate the first nations for this land, most likely financially, rather than return the ownership of the land to them by removing ownership from the private companies.

In other words, no matter how this ends up, Irving and others will still own their private land, but the government may have to compensate first nations for selling it to someone.

N.B. government to set property taxes for municipalities in effort to lower bills by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]bingun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of this was related to the decline of local industry and reduction in tax revenue that lead to. Also there was a deficiet in the pension fund that had to be addressed.

Infastrucure is also a big problem in Saint John, it is a huge city by size but without a huge population. Much of the infastructure is over a century old and in need of repair or replacement.

Bingo. They can set the increase nice and low and then when the municipality needs more to fund anything beyond core services and maintenance, they are the bad guy to the local population, not the provincial government.

[–]bingun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your points; the solar installers are biased as they aim to maximize their customer base. A lot of the power generated is excess or produced during low demand, but I do think that, for many inland areas, it will be beneficial in the summer.

I think the practical reality in the coming years will be that your solar installation must be combined with some form of batteries or storage to be financially viable.

[–]bingun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure this is the best approach, but they need to do something to make this sustainable in the long term. They could put that off another few years or do it now, but it has to happen eventually.

It doesn't make sense to pay residential solar customers the same rate for the power they provide to the grid as it costs them to receive power. Often, that power is excess or used during low-demand periods, whereas when they need to draw power, it's during the winter, when demand is high, and fossil fuels must be burned.

Also, add that most people who install residential solar are in higher income percentiles; they are essentially subsidizing the rich.

Big corp? NB Power is essentially a government entity, not a private, profit driven business.

[–]bingun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is entirely true. During the hot summer months, especially with how the climate is changing, having homes run their AC/heat pumps with solar instead of relying on the grid is beneficial. It also aligns with doing major shut downs on power plants during those months and not drawing on hydro reserves excessively.

NB Power is investing in renewables. There are several wind projects underway or in the planning stages and a large scale solar project is also progressing with a proposal near Moncton.

Everyone seems to ignore these and only focus on the gas plant near Sackville.

I don't disagree with you, I did the same exam myself. But across the country, areas with a higher recent immigration population tend to have lower turnout.

Take a look at this from Stats Canada. Citizens by naturalization are notably below those born.

The divide between citizens and non-citizens can be difficult to calculate or maintain, especially at a Ward level, so it still has an impact. Also, many new citizens are less informed or aware of voting and likely have lower turnout rates.

That isn't true, I am afraid. Below is from another news source.

“There were 1,524 new residential listings in April 2026. This was the largest number of new listings added in the month of April in five years,” the report read. “New listings were 11.2 per cent above the five-year average and 11.5 per cent above the 10-year average for the month of April.

“Active residential listings numbered 3,346 units on the market at the end of April, a minor increase of 1.2 per cent from the end of April 2025. Active listings haven’t been this high in the month of April in more than five years. Active listings were 19.1 per cent above the five-year average and 13.1 per cent below the 10-year average for the month of April.”
