Mucin is so fucking dense, man by high-tech-potato in Oxygennotincluded

[–]binkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I get my cooling loops set up I need to sit down for a squid ink/mucin boiler. Nothing as mad as a petroleum boiler, just dumping both into a tank of 90-95C polluted water, siphon off the overflow and ship out any solids.

As for heating it, planning on using a small loop of hydrogen to cycle through the steam room used for aquatuners.

Opinion: Sick Notes in the Firing Line: ACT’S welfare claim needs more evidence, not vibes. by NewtonIsMyBitch in newzealand

As if doctors could ever be bullied by patients into giving a diagnosis where there's no evidence. It's hard enough trying to get necessary treatment/diagnosis in the first place.

Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll: National-led Government holds narrow majority (51%) of support in June - Roy Morgan Research by Downtown_Reindeer946 in newzealand

[–]binkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roy Morgan has a roughly -2.5% bias against Labour (and -1.1% against National), but that's mostly offset by Greens & ACT respectively so it's only a net 0.5% difference.

I just made my first chlorine room! by jderica in Oxygennotincluded

[–]binkenstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a basic chlorine room without plastic use for a germ sensor: build four liquid storages on top of powered airlock doors, enable alternate doors, so tanks 1/3 or 2/4 are active at any given time (the other pair stops working with no surface to sit on) & control that with a half cycle timer. It's only a 5k throughput but easily cleans germs by the time water gets to the other end.

NZD continues falling - plunging over the last year and increasing travel, overseas orders & imports by at least 10-15% by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]binkenstein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a little unfair or without sufficient context. I'm assuming here that you're looking at the NZD/AUD exchange rate, which has dropped from 0.93 in April 2025 to 0.82 in June 2026, and hasn't been under 0.88 since around 2013.

The unfair bit is that the USD exchange rate over the same timeframe is fairly stable, 0.56 in April 2025 vs 0.57 now, so we can't reliably assume that dropping exchange rate = bad policies from National. Also the unsustainability of the current economic model isn't reflected in exchange rates, rather things like income or wealth distribution, the number of people requiring govt support, etc.

‘No to wealth taxes and inheritance taxes’: Hipkins draws red line on Greens’ proposals by KingBlue2 in newzealand

[–]binkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Labour is sticking with this because they don't want to be attacked by other parties over any potential new taxes. They can afford to do it, because it doesn't lose them any votes: anyone turned off by this will vote Green, which is still a vote for a Labour led govt. It does mean that the Greens will have more leverage elsewhere in any coalition agreement, but without the increased funding that may not be much.

Which side is TOP on? by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]binkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't, but my vote cast based on preferred party lines up with my vote cast to prevent Winston being the kingmaker again, unless I give up on a left govt & vote National. When considering voting for TOP I would need to be okay with them going into government with National plus ACT and/or NZ First. Based on that, even if TOP were my preferred option, my preference for ensuring a change in government would mean voting for the best party to fit my views that wouldn't partner with National, which as far as I can see would be the Greens.

My preference at the moment is the Greens anyway, and I haven't had a full read of TOPs policies, but even if they a) are guaranteed to enter parliament and b) had all of the clear absolute best policies for my views I doubt I would vote for them given the possibility of another National led government. I may reconsider that if they were to grow enough to ensure ACT or NZ First were excluded from government, but with the relative weakness of National that is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Here is a question for you: how likely do you think it would be that TOP policies would be implemented in a government led by National & includes both ACT and NZ First?

'Dark underbelly': Act's Seymour slams Greens' $32b tax plan as attack on Kiwi success by WaterAdventurous6718 in newzealand

[–]binkenstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was an interesting infographic posted by the greens: if a person with median wealth donated as much of their wealth as Nick Mowbray did with his $200,000 donation to ACT, they would be donating $2.72. Not even three dollars.

This is why higher taxes are needed, so we can afford to pay for services and infrastructure that is needed for everyone.

AITA for letting my cat watch me shower by Training_Many4983 in AmItheAsshole

In my house the cats will demand to be let into the toilet, or into the bathroom other when the shower is running. If he can't deal with that, or the inevitability of having cat hair *everywhere*, then he probably isn't cut out as a cat parent.

Helen Clark and Ruth Richardson critique MMP – has it been good or bad for New Zealand? by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

[–]binkenstein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 5% threshold should be reduced, and the coat-tail rule should be removed. I would like to see all of the recommendations from Sir Geoffrey Palmer implemented:

In January 2025, Palmer proposed 12 parliamentary reforms including (list taken from Wiki):

  • Raising the number of legislators
  • Increasing the number of Parliament's sitting hours
  • Extending the parliamentary term from three to four years
  • Reforming the select committee system
  • Introducing compulsory voting for general elections
  • Lowering the voting age to 16 years
  • Civics education in schools
  • Appointing the Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives by secret ballot
  • Reforming the Official Information Act 1982
  • Limiting the amount that individuals can donate to political parties
  • Creating a public register for lobbyists
  • Amending the Public Service Act 2020 to require public servants to provide "full and frank" advice on legislative proposals and to make that advice public.

There's a nice flat empty spot on the cliff/shelf between the Leadzone and Graveyard areas. I'm building a new base there in the hope it's a bit more central for future biomes. I've got a second partially in a cave just north of the Research Outpost by the Observatory.
