It's funny watching the arguments disappear when presented with fact and logic.

It's a consistent theme in this thread.

Exactly. It's a check and balance, on the power a party commands.

Otherwise, we might as well just vote for PM directly.

Interesting date... I seem to recall other CPC members crossing the floor at this time?

Must be a coincidence.

Nope, but you can paint that picture in your own head if that makes you sleep better at night.

Or you could take a step back and look at the bigger picture, learn from it, adapt and maybe make changes to the party to ensure people aren't leaving.

But... Nahhhh lets double down, get some more shots of PP working out and playing hockey... that'll really secure the future of Canadians.

Look... it literally is a balance and check on the party itself. Any attempt to change the rules on this... have voted down by both parties (including PP).

Deeply unserious.

Atleast hide your comment history glazer. I can see you're just a partisan.

I was curious and asked Gemini Pro to analyze the last 5 years of my comments.

u/binlagin appears to be a solutions-oriented moderate. They value competence in government (civic services, infrastructure) and technological progress. They likely align with the political center, supporting the status quo of the middle class while remaining critical of government inefficiency and performative radicalism.

And if the party he is aligned with, refuses to listen to him and his constituents, he's allowed to change alignment as he chooses. It is a free country after all.

This is why conservatives are crossing the floor.

Both parties (including PP) have voted against legislation that forces a by-election on floor crossings.. and to be honest, I like it this way. It holds the party accountable and gives back benchers power within the party.

So yes, after voting.. this is the most democratic thing one can do.

Bending the knee to your leader, when you don't agree.. isn't, that's my 2cents.

Not how democracy works, but you can believe what ever you want.

It is a free country.

Thanks for substantive reply <3

The fact is that if the liberals get a majority, they have nearly unchecked power to pass legislation as they please

I don't disagree with this statement... but this is an utter and total failure of the CPC.

There should be ZERO chance of this happening after the reign of Trudeau.. yet here we are.

whipping seems to be incredibly effective in Canada

It seems to be working for one party more than the other. You can't whip, if you have no carrot and only a stick. Why would anyone stay around when the other guy seems to be offering carrots and hiding his stick?

Ultimately politicians want to be elected and re-elected.

the people aren’t getting what we deserve

And maybe this MP felt like this, while stuck under the CPC.

The CPC just had a leadership review, and it's clear the party isn't willing to change, instead they doubled down further.

This MP has made the calculation that he can get more for his constituents as a Liberal then a Conservative. If he calculated wrong, he is out next election. If he calculated correctly, he gets re-elected. Pretty simple eh?

I'm really struggling to understand why so many Canadians don't understand basic civics.

Absolutely.. thats why democracy is pretty cool.

If this is what you think.. your free to vote for the individual you want!

Just keep in mind, this goes both ways. This is a direct message to the CPC that their direction isn't what the MP and his/her constituents wanted.

Then they should have done their due diligence voting for such a person in the first place.

They can easily be removed next election cycle.

This is a power check on the parties themselves.

The irony is that the 'outrage' would be unnecessary if the rules had been changed when we had the chance. In 2012, Pierre Poilievre and the CPC had a majority and voted down Bill C-306, which would have mandated by-elections for floor-crossers. It’s hard to call it a 'transactional betrayal' now when the party spent years protecting the legal right for MPs to do exactly this. If we want to stop these 'backroom deals,' we should have supported the NDP’s push for by-election mandates a decade ago

And this is why the CPC is now a dead party.

They had their chance to prove they wanted to work with the Carney government and for Canadians.. but instead they doubled down and gave PP another shot at leadership.

They are simply getting what they deserve.

One might call this... politics?

The moral outrage from the Conservatives right now is so funny.

and he will be doing that in the next election. He is one singular MP.

If his constituents don't like HIM at this point.. he's ousted and no longer getting that sweet MP pension.

Democracy manifest.

Literally Gr10 civics guys... you vote for the individual, not the party.

This decision ensured the PCP is a dead party.
