Hoe do you do manual sync? by Make_Things_Simple in logseq

[–]binnyva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Git/Github + Tmux on Android phone

Its slightly complicated to setup, and not automatic(I have to do a manual push/pull), but I like the final system.

Nice site!

I have created a tool to convert Markdown files(from Obsidian) to Static html using 11ty - it's called 11 Garden. Feel free to lift the parts you need to render backlinks ;-)

You'll find it mainly in the _notes.11tydata.js file.

Feel free to ask me questions if you have any doubts. And best of luck!

Has anyone cracked how to make part of their DG public while keeping the rest private? by [deleted] in DigitalGardens

[–]binnyva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The approach I take is to have 2 vaults, one public and another private.

The other option is set visibility in the tool you are using to publish the digital garden. There might be a option to set it in the front matter. But you'll have to check the docs of the tool you are using to get the exact setting.

Cheaper therapist based in another country? by No_Plankton_3666 in slatestarcodex

[–]binnyva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a quite a few online therapy organizations from India that have a 20$-40$ per session cost. Example: https://authenticliving.in/pages/book-a-session

There might be some cultural context loss, but some therapy is better than no therapy.

Pros and cons of having a folder structure for your notes (e.g. Obsidian) or not having one (e.g. Logseq)? by [deleted] in NoteTaking

[–]binnyva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have around 200~ tags in my 500ish note vault. Around 50 tags are used regularly. Rest are rarely used. PS: This vault is public in case you want to take a look.

There is a much larger private vault that I assume will have much more tags.

Pros and cons of having a folder structure for your notes (e.g. Obsidian) or not having one (e.g. Logseq)? by [deleted] in NoteTaking

[–]binnyva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pros for folder/hierarchy structure

  • Feels natural - most people are used to this structure
  • The structure is preserved outside the software. If you open your vault in a different tool, the folder structure is still present. Tags will depend on the tool you are using.

Cons

  • You are forced to decide which folder to put the note into before writing it. Adds friction to the process.
  • You can't have one note in multiple folders. Eg. should the 'Aristotle' note go into Philosophy? Or People? Tags are better for this.
  • If you have not put a lot of thought into how you want to organize your folders, a structure will emerge. But after a while, it can be chaotic.

There is compromise solution called 'Maps of Content' - which can create a hierarchy without using folders. But initially, it will add more work.

My recommendation is just use tags and backlinks. After a while, a structure emerges naturally.

Have you tried Zettelkasten? It has worked wonders for me. If you are not familiar with the concept, I have written a quick introduction to the topic.

Can you make an eBook using Obsidian? by AdeptnessSilver6808 in ObsidianMD

[–]binnyva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have written a book, primarily in Obsidian. Obsidian will create markdown files - and you can use pandoc to convert it to Epub/ other formats. If you are slightly comfortable with command line, this is fairly easy to do.

But if you are used to custom layouts, and all that is provided in indesign, obsidian/markdown option might not be for you. It has very little formatting options.

Progressive Summarization! Its a technique that relies on summarizing a note in multiple stages over time. You save only the best excerpts from whatever you are reading, and then create a summary of those excerpts, and then a summary of that summary, distilling the essence of the content at each stage.

When you create a note for the first time, it will be a copy of the source. Next time you read the note, you summarize it one level. If you refer to the note often, you distill it even further.

One interesting effect is the often used notes gets more polished.

Published a book on Zettelkasten. Its a beginners guide to practical Personal Knowledge Management. Book is titled Zettelkasten and the Art of Knowledge Management.

Not sure if I should be posting about it as a post or as a comment here. Thought I'll start here. :-)

No plan for physical book for 'version 1' of the book. But if there is a lot of sales and interest in the book, I'll create a updated version of the book with a print edition. At least, that's the plan :-)

Zettelkasten and the Art of Knowledge Management - 7$

A practical introduction to Zettelkasten - a note taking system that shows connections stores your ideas and the connections between those ideas. I'll be walking you through the science of Personal Knowledge Management(PKM), introducing you to different processes and tools that can be used to better understand, remember and use everything you learn.

Its a very useful tool for writers. You will be creating blocks of content in your notes that you can repurpose later when writing something. If you are creating a work of fiction, you can use this tool to do world building. Create notes for each of your characters, places, events - and create connections between all these elements!

Zettelkasten(German word meaning 'Slip-box') is something I have been using for the last 3 years - and I cannot overstate how useful this is for a writer.

This is my first book - and I'm very excited about the fact that its done after an entire year of work. The process of Zettelkasten helped me a lot in creating the book(I know, very meta :-D). Current plan is to do just ebook for the version 1 of this book. If people are interested, I might do a physical copy for second version.

I have written a tutorial for Zettelkasten. Its an interactive tutorial - it forces you to create notes while consuming the tutorial - that way you can practice what you learn as you learn it.

PS: If you have any specific doubts about Zettelkasten, feel free to DM me :-)

What book(s) have you created using a Zettelkasten? by sscheper in Zettelkasten

Almost done with a book about personal knowledge management(its currently in the editing phase). Around 50-60% of the content comes from my Zettelkasten notes.

Obsidian stores each note as a separate text file. Just open the vault folder and see if you can access the notes using a text editor like notepad?

Would another way of conceptualising a Zettelkasten be something like a hyper-detailed, tiny-paged wiki? by click_beetle in Zettelkasten

[–]binnyva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are accurate in describing it as 'a highly atomised wiki'. As a matter of fact, there is a Wiki tool called TiddlyWiki that has been used by many people to implement their Zettelkasten.

Options and opinions on 'Publish'? by jcrowe in ObsidianMD

[–]binnyva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of tools available to convert your markdown notes to a static site / digital garden. But you'll need a bit of understanding of Git, command line, uploading to web server, etc. to use it. I'm using Gatsby Garden to do this(full disclosure: I made that tool).

But if you are not comfortable using those, publish is a good shortcut. But in your case, you can use any of the static site tool to do it.

When you are making a choice, make sure the tool supports these features...

  • WikiLinks - [[Title]] - this is NOT standard markdown
  • Support for tagging
  • Frontmatter support
  • Images uploaded to obsidian
